Ahoy Matey!
Welcome back to another blog post. Today I will be presenting my last previous project from before spring break. This was a short but fast project as we had 12 school days before the break. Not only did we learn about the adventurous pirates that we hear about in stories, but also pirates in the modern day.
We began the project by watching the movie, Captain Phillips, which is based off of a true story. Back in 2009, a boat called the Maersk Alabama was taken over by Somalian pirates off of the Somalian coast. The captain was then taken hostage by the pirates because they didn’t get the amount of money they came for. The US navy then came and rescued Captain Phillips by killing the pirates after things got tense.
Cargo ships aren’t the only ships that pirates attack. Cruise ships and large yachts are also a part of the group of ships that are targeted by pirates.
After watching this movie, we then had an idea of what piracy today looked like. Over the weeks we gathered information about why and how piracy became a thing and why its still going on today.
We spent lots of time gathering information and putting them into notes.
The final product for this project was a AR video. This was a video that made our drawings 3D as we also talked about what drove europeans to begin trade with people of the new world (North and South America).
And to finish of the project our teachers brought us White Spot pirate packs for lunch on the last day!
This was definitely one of my favourite projects so far because I really enjoyed learning about piracy in two different times.
