The medium is the message: Final learning portfolio post

This project has gone by so fast! I can’t believe we are almost at the end of our second project and the end of first quarter.  The driving question for this project is “How does what we see, read, and hear influence us. Throughout the project, I’ve  completed 6 milestones, 3 advertisement drafts for Honey Doughnuts in  Deep Cove and did a few other assignments along the way.

Milestone 1

We started the project with milestone 1 by watching an ad from Apple called “Welcome Home”. We had to identify what the message and who the target audience was. As I worked, I watched the video a couple times I could see the ad in the bigger picture which allowed me to understand the video a lot easier. Since I found the idea of the ad pretty straight forward, I finished this assignment rather quickly. I enjoyed the video and I would say that it was a pretty good ad because I wanted to buy a HomePod for about a week.

Milestone 2

For this milestone I had to find an ad and answer the five key media literacy questions we learned in class. After that, I had to write a paragraph at the bottom that explains what I thought the message of the video was, who it was targeted to, and how it sends the message. I found that this ad was slightly harder because I chose a small and simple ad that didn’t have a lot of design on it. Eventually I finished it and I was proud of myself because I found a lot of media in the ad. Thankfully Halloween was just around the corner so the craving for a KitKat eventually died down.

Milestone 3

In this milestone, we had to choose an ad that is 10+ years old. With that same ad we had to identify the target audience and how it would impact them today and when the ad was released. I found this milestone to be one of my favourites because I really enjoyed identifying the differences between now and before. To me, its always interesting to compare old items to the same ones today so I really enjoyed this milestone.

Milestone 4

We have been adding to this milestone in the Numbers app ever since the beginning of this project. We have added our plans for our drafts, our guidelines for our drafts, and the scripts for both the phone calls and the emails we sent. We also added every single draft we made and added our feedback notes. Each piece of work listed was put into categories following the L.A.U.N.C.H folders. I found this was a great place to store our work and info.

Milestone 5

For this milestone, we had to find 3 examples that go with both the book “The Gospel According To Larry” and the McLuhan sheet we looked over in class. I was having trouble understanding the task which lead me to taking about 2 hours to finish the assignment. After reaching out for help I got back on track and was able to finish smoothly.

Milestone 6

This milestone was the easiest one yet. All we had to do was to add a picture of the ad final ad we sent to our Deep Cove business.

Other than the milestones and advertisements, we had a few extra assignments.

Advertising photo journal

Over the past 5 weeks we had to find and take pictures of ads we saw. We used a Numbers page to fill out the sections for the ads we added each week. I found the ads at bus stations, walking home, the newspaper, and even in the bathroom. While being on the lookout for these ads, it made me realize how much advertising there really is around us. Even though it was hard for me to remember to complete each week’s column, I found it interesting finding and writing about the ads.

Final team advertisement

We used the feedback that we got from our classmates and made the changes we needed to. We had quite a few so we had to work fast before class ended. After finishing up the last touches on the ad, we chose one person to submit it to Showbie.

Guest speakers

Our teachers sent our final ad drafts to a real Creative Director. His job is to make ads for companies so it aligned nicely to what we were doing. Through Zoom, he gave us feedback on our business ads and how to improve them. We then used that feedback and made the ad we sent to our business. I found it cool and getting proper feedback from a pro.

The day after, a lady that works in the marketing section of Apple in Toronto talked to us about her job. We were given an assignment where we had to write what we connected with what she said, something that extended our thinking about a subject, and something we found challenging, confusing, or that we wondered about. She told us a lot more than what we were expecting and I thought it was awesome getting to talk to someone who works in a huge company.

Overall, this has been one of the best projects I’ve done and I’m really glad we did it.
