Destination Imagination, it has been a crazy ride.
Destination imagination (DI) is a competition where different groups challenge one another in different challenge subjects, some are engineering, technical, scientific, fine arts, and improv. Teams usually are of 2 to 7 members. I was in the improv team. Our team had 4 members, Jessie, Maggie, Lauren, and I.
We needed to focus and do our best for this competition. Even though we were doing improv. Which is only acting, we still had to get prepared and practice. We got a list of some genres and characters that could be given to us during the competition. How it works is that some member of the DI judges that would be marking us tells us which character and genre we need to use in our play. We would have to make up a story get our props and present it in under 3 minutes. The DI judges then watch our performance and give us a score. The team needs to do this three times. Each time with a different genres and character, but with the same story prompt.
When we first started preparing for DI, our group had no idea what to expect. We all didn’t know how to prepare for the tournament. I especially didn’t know how to improve very well. For the first couple of weeks we only were able to practice different improv scenes. When we improved we got to know who was better at doing what. Eventually we got better in using our props and acting out our genres and characters. The props were all in this box that we bought from U-haul. The limit amount of props were that we could not exceed the price of 50 dollars US, which is 66 dollars Canadian. I personally think preparing the box-o-stuff was the easiest part of our challenge.
The day of the event was Saturday February 25, 2017. We were all very stressed out and nervous. We didn’t know what to expect. Lauren’s mom drove our group to the tournament. When we arrived we say so many people. We almost couldn’t find our teachers because it was extremely crowded.

Our first activity was our instant challenge. An instant challenge is a challenge that you have no preparation for. The people just give you a challenge and you have to solve it. For a while we sat around. To be exact it was 2 1/2 hours. We went exploring the school, watching our classmates do there challenges, but before we knew it was our time to do the improv challenge. lots of our classmates came to watch and support us but I was still nervous. We were all scared. We went into the room, and they gave us our genre, character, and story line. We did our challenge and it went better than I thought it would. After the performance we debriefed our improv acting and laughed about the funny things that happened during our challenge. Once we finished our improv challenge, we waited for all the other teams to finish so that we can get our scores.
Unfortunately there were issues with the computers. We did not end up getting our results that day. The next day the results were on the Destination Imagination website. We got number #6, which means we are going to the provincials.
April 8, here we come. Wish us luck.
