My First Synthesis Essay

In Escape to Gold Mountain by David Wong and “Jook-Liang, only sister” from The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy, the mood, tone, and word choice represent the struggle minorities faced to achieve to equity, and the empathy we feel for their struggle. This is the thesis of the essay that I recently completed. In this blog post, I will be describing the steps I took to finish this essay. We started with a Venn diagram, created an outline, and then the final draft.

Our class started by creating a Venn diagram to compare the style between both books. The primary focus was to find similarities between these two novels which we could write the essay about later. Here is how the Venn diagram looked.

Following the Venn diagram came the outline. This outline required us to create a thesis, hook, topic sentences, quotes, and explaining the quotes. When I created my outline, I did not have the best understanding of how to create a synthesis essay. Our outline was meant to be used to build the entire essay, but mine was not made very well. I had to change a lot from my outline to my final essay, but by doing that I improved it greatly. If I were to create a new synthesis essay outline, it would be much better because I now know what is required in this kind of essay. Here is a fragment of my essay outline, but my outline is very different from my final product.

Finally I created my finished product. It took me a few hours to create the final draft because my outline did not set it up very well. In the end, I think my final draft ended up very well. I have published it to a free publishing website called Booksie for you to read.
