The year was 1993. President George Bush Senior had just finished his first term in office as President of The United States. He finished his first term with an average approval rating of 43%, which was three percent higher than acclaimed Republican Ronald Reagan. Bush had alienated much of his conservative base by breaking his 1988 campaign pledge against raising taxes, the economy was in a recession, and Bush’s perceived greatest strength, foreign policy, was regarded as much less important following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the relatively peaceful climate in the Middle East after the defeat of Iraq in the Gulf War. Reagan and Bush, the two previous Presidents of The United States had both been Republicans, and following the trend throughout history, a change was apparent in the future.
The election of 1993 was in full swing. Running for the Republicans, and a second term in office, was George Bush Sr. Running against him on the Democratic side was William (Bill) Clinton. Bill Clinton’s roots represent the true American dream, and hes used this extremely well in his favor to gain popularity. Born in Arkansas , Bill’s father passed when he was only three years old. Surprisingly, Bill shook hands with President John F. Kennedy when he was only seventeen years old. This inspired and motivated him through his pursuit into politics. Clinton’s education grew significantly as he attended Georgetown University for international affairs, University of Oxford, University of Arkansas for Law, and graduated from Yale Universities Law school. Here, he also met his soon to be wise Hillary Rodham (presently known as Hillary Clinton).
