The Urbanization of B.C During The Laurier Era

This is my first blog post and I have to say it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. In past years I’ve heard all about “the dreaded blog posts” as some called them, but I never actually took into account what making one for myself would be like. Well now I know. For me, this assignment was very challenging and caused a lot of stress; I was near ready to rip my hair out.  I just couldn’t seem to wrap my head around the concept of what a blog was supposed to even look like or be and it was frustrating! Asking friends didn’t help when the only response I got was, “it can be anything.” “It can be anything,” means it can literally be anything… Thanks for narrowing it down!  However, since I struggled so much with this assignment, and put in so much time and effort, that’s why the end product is so much more rewarding to me.

For my blog post I decided I wanted to choose an inquiry question that some how related to the growth and modernization of Canada. After days of contemplation, I finally came up with: During the Laurier Era, how did Canada’s Westward expansion affect urban growth in British Columbia? I especially liked this question because it intrigued me. I honestly had no idea what the answer was and that’s exactly what I wanted. However, already being pretty far out of my comfort zone with assignment, I decided to stick with what I knew and make an iMovie. In the video, I explain how The Last Best West advertisement attracted millions of immigrants to Canada and how it fuelled the population of the West. I also talk about some of the reasons why people started coming to B.C, what roles they had in society, and how the years of 1896-1911 played such a crucial part in B.C’s urbanization. I hope you enjoy watching it!
