Recently in plp we’ve been working on elements and compounds. this is usually a pretty boring subject, but our teacher Ms. Pye always finds ways to spice things up a bit. Just a few days ago we did a lab that demonstrated the production of metal using single replacement reaction.
First we gathered our materials.
We used copper chloride (CuCl2) Aluminum (Al) Aluminum Chloride (AlCl3) and Copper (Cu)
Then we moved on to our experiment. My partner and I started by putting Aluminum foil in a beaker filled with the Copper Chloride. Doing this caused a reaction where the aluminum broke down and changed into copper.
After that we took out the chunks of copper and started cleaning it with water and hydrochloric acid.
Once the copper was clean we took it out the beaker and used tongs to hold it up to a Bunsen Bruner to burn it.
The copper caused the flame to turn green
