I have just finished making the house of my dreams. 4800 square feet of pure awesomeness. Recently in scimatics (math and science) we have been learning about blueprints and scale diagrams. As a final assignment our task was to make a house that fit into the “stated criteria” and to present it in a cool engaging way. My group and I decided to make ours on Minecraft. Now you may be saying to yourself, “wow, their homework is to play a video game.” You’re not wrong, but it wasn’t actually that easy. First we had to graph out the design of the house and find out how many square feet each room was.
I found the kitchen to be very stubborn to make because, for example, some appliances could only be so far apart, and the sink couldn’t go next to the refrigerator. Most of the house’s interior design was just made up by my group and I, but you can clearly that each room is distinct throughout the house.
For instance in the first picture you can see the garage and the outside of the house. In the second picture you can see the dining room and the lounge.
I found that working in a group was pretty difficult. One of our partners didn’t have Minecraft, and didn’t really want to get it, so two of us were stuck with building the whole house. I think building the house on Minecraft was a pretty good idea. We could build the house so that one square foot in the design could be half scaled into one block in Minecraft. This made the construction part so much easier because we could build a direct replica of the design we made on paper.
Overall I think it was a pretty fun and exciting project. I liked how the students could chose which format they used to build their houses and I liked building the house.
