Week seven, Chinese New Year

For week seven which is traditions, I decided to write about a tradition that I have celebrated every year with my family and that is Chinese New Year. This is always a fun celebration, we get nice food to eat and decorate the house with New Years decorations, so here is a little bit about our tradition.

There are many different things that my family does when Chinese New Year comes around and one of the things that we have to do is clean everything the day before. This is because people believe that during the new year everything is given luck, and therefore by cleaning you are getting rid of all the luck that you have received. This means no sweeping, vacuuming, or even bathing, my mother hates this part.

One other thing we do is go downtown and watch the New Years parade, it has many dancers, martial artists, and lot of dragons, they come in many sizes and colours but they always follow the same pattern as the drum. There is one thing they do that I still don’t understand, what they will do is wait for shop keepers to hang lettuce from their stores and then the dragons will jump at least three feet and grab the lettuce in their mouths. This leaves a lot of mess all around the shops but no one seems to care.

After the big parade we then head out to Dim Sum which is Chinese food, when we get to a table they will ask you if you want anything right away and if you don’t want something at that moment then you will have to ask one of the servers who bring giant carts around filled with different foods. The many types of food here is always good and something me and my brothers always look forward to.

Then just to wrap up the day both my brothers and I will receive a thing called liasee which is usually a red envelope filled with money. Most people have seen or heard of liasee even if they don’t know what it is.

That sums up what my family does during this traditional holiday, and just to add on to what I have written I drew a Chinese New Year dragon in Sketches pro and then filled it in with non copyright pictures of fireworks.

That’s all for now.
