Oregon school trip reflection.
We did so much during Oregon so I am going to break it down into some of my favourite memories.( applogize for the videos coming out as links. If you want to view them just click on the link.)
The first highlight I will share is our visit to Astoria Tower which is 125 feet tall. The images on the tower are know as Scrafito which were done by an Italian artist who would have carved the images into the tower inch by inch. The images on the tower depict the history of the pioneers, from when they landed on shore, to building the first trading post.
The second highlight of our trip is when we visited Cannon Beach.
What made the visit so important to me was the view. We were stopping at the beach just before heading to our cabins for the night, so the sun was just setting, and the view was so amazing! Not only that but there was an old, rusted shipwreck on the beach that look half sticking out of the sand.
Skipping ahead a bit, the next highlight is all about our amazing zip lining experience. We traveled to Warrenton to go zip lining at High Life Adventures. They had great instructors who told us how to safely have the best time ever. The beginning lines were not very long or high, but later on the zip lines got extreme. My favourite, which I think is called “Huckleberry”, was 960 feet long and the fastest zip line they have! Not only that, but one of their zip lines let us dip our hands or our entire body into a small lake! Some people went for the full soak while others chose the safer( smarter ) choice of a hand soak. As well as awesome experiences, we also had some amazing food.
We went to Nisa’s Thai House. Not only is the food amazing, but it is also a PLP tradition. All the food was great! We tried all the different dishes and one of the beef plates even came on fire! It was probably the best Thai food that I have ever had.

Going forward we visited Hatfield Marine Centre where we learned all about different animals and their habitats. We got the chance to race crabs( they were very slow) and we got to touch and learn about different species such as ghost shrimp, clams and sea anemone. We did not just learn about animals though, we also learned about tsunamis because Hatfield Marine Centre is in a tsunami prone zone, with its closest safe point being 12 minutes away. They had tsunami machines that created small simulated recreations of real tsunamis.

In addition they had a sand table that had a land scape projected onto the sand showing the change in land formation, as seen in the video on the right. Not only did we do all of the above, we also learned about and built our own ROVs ( remote operated vehicles). We had to draw a design, then create the design using PVC pipes, three engines, some power wires and a magnet. Our goal was to fish out as many things from the bottom of a small pool.We had to add cut up pool noddles to keep our ROV afloat. That part took us forever because we had to get the exact right amount of floatation or else our ROV would sink too much or float too much. Our ROV is on the left in the video below.

The next and second last thing I have to share is the most amazing buffet I have ever been to. John’s Incredible Pizza Company is like nothing you have ever been to before. Not only do they have a huge buffet with a salad bar, lunch, dinner and desert, they also have a huge arcade with winnable prizes!

The last highlight that I will share are some smaller memories. The South Jetty which has been shaping the land around it for a long time, Fort Stevens which built as protect from invaders using the Columbia River. The Tillamook Creamery is where all sorts of dairy products are made. It was simply amazing there! Last but not least is Haystack Rock. This, I would say, is the most impressive rock that I have ever seen, so impressive that it is protected by government law( that’s not why, but it is protected).
Those are just a few of the highlights of our grade 8 PLP trip to Oregon. We all had an amazing time, bonded mm a class and got to know our awesome teachers even better!
