Welcome back to day 9 of the Student Blogging Challenge. Can you believe we are nearly done? This week’s challenge is all about celebrations and holidays.
Holidays are amazing. For a lot of us, they hold some of the greatest memories that we have, and they are always something to look forward to. So I’m going to talk about some of my favourite memories from the holidays.
My family doesn’t celebrate that many holidays, so I’m just going to talk about my favourite one, Christmas! Christmas is the biggest holiday that my family celebrates. Every Christmas, my family tries to travel somewhere (this year Covid-19 really put a stop to that). Sometimes we hop on a plane a visit my grandparents, but my favourite is when we get in a car, and travel to a ski resort.
1: For some reason, I was always super excited about the hotel we stayed in. My favourites were when the hotel has a loft, that you could throw things up and down. I don’t know why but it always really excited me to live someplace new and more cramped for a while.
2: Now we can’t talk about ski resorts with talking about skiing. The first skiing related memory was when we decided to go to the very far side of the mountain, where not a lot of people go, and where the snow was still fresh. There, we found a blue line that snaked it’s way through the trees. Also flowing through the trees was a blanket of fog that made everything look so mystical. I was like skiing through a real life enchanted forest, where everything was peaceful and quiet.
3: Now like almost everybody, my family exchanges gifts over Christmas, and one of my favourite most used gift was also the most unexpected. The Christmas of 2019, everybody had finished opening their presents. I had also opened all my presents, but apparently there was one more present hiding in the back of the closet. It was a present that I was supposed to get 5 years earlier when I was 8, but my mom had completely forgotten about it, until now. That present was a set of magnets and plastic pieces that you could build with. The plastic pieces weren’t that interesting, BUT THOSE MAGNETS. Those magnets are the best fidget toy and building material in the world. I’ve used them for countless different things, and I still use them to this day.

Now that I’ve finished talking about the memories and the stories, let me tell you about the food.
Every year, my family tries to make at least one big homemade meal, and there are two foods that are starting to become tradition in my family for the holidays. Pierogis and pies, lots of pies.
Starting off with the pierogis. If you’ve never had a really good pierogi, you are really missing out. It’s basically just potatoes, cheese, and bacon wrapped together in a egg dough and fried in a ton of butter. What’s not to like? I’ve only made this once for Christmas, but I really want to make it every time, they are that good.

Next up are the pies. The pie that I most often make is an apple pie, and it’s simple and pretty easy. Pies may seem hard to make, but it really isn’t too bad. Plus they’re super delicious, especially with vanilla ice cream.

I think the hardest thing to get right about a pie is the crust. To get a good crust, you first need to mix your flour and shortening so that it looks like a bunch of small pebbles. The shortening pebbles should be no bigger then about a cm. After that you mix the dough until it just barely comes together. It should act like wet sand, and feel way to dry and crumbly for a dough. My best tip for pie dough is to laminate it after the first rest. This basically means to fold the dough onto itself and roll it out again multiple times until it holds it’s shape.

Anyways, thanks for listening to me rant about the holidays and Christmas, even though it’s like the middle of spring, and I hope you will try some of these recipes sometime.
See you next time,
