Take your work to kid day! Wait…

On November 1st all the grade nines at my school went to “take your kid to work day”. This day was a chance to see what our parents do at their work. Unlike the rest of the school, us plp-ers were told to get three interviews with people at our parents work.

I went with my dad because I already know a lot about my moms work and I wouldn’t have been able to get enough interviews there. My dad works at the Head Office for MEC. He is the all-purpose, troubleshooting and process improvement person. Basically, he does different jobs depending on what is asked of him.

I was given a sheet with a few questions on it that I had to fill out while at MEC. I didn’t have a pen or pencil with me, so I recorded the interviewee’s answers. While none of my interviewees wished to have video, I was allowed to record audio.

Honestly, I probably wouldn’t enjoy working at the head office. I don’t know what about it makes it so uninteresting. Don’t get me wrong, they do great work there and the people are nice and everything. But I guess its because of the fact that my personality wouldn’t match the workspace. I prefer to stay indoors working or playing on a computer, and working amongst all the exercise equipment and the bikes and climbing gear and all outdoor stuff wouldn’t mesh with me.

On the flip side, if I did get a job there, I would probably want a job as a web developer. From what I know, they mostly focus on the MEC website. They’re the people who make the website what it is and make changes to it. In one of my interviews with a web developer, Jeffery, he says that the fewer clicks a customer has to make, the more likely they are to buy something. This was very odd to me, because I don’t go shopping online and think “oh jeez, I’m just one click from this awesome sweater, but it’s already been 4 clicks. I’m just gonna not buy it. It’s just too much effort.” Although I do see why too many clicks may be bad. If your website takes the customer from the website to a page about sweaters to a page about snowboards to YouTube then facebook, it get really complicated.

The other two interviews were a lot less interesting (from a story telling point of view). One interview was with Shannon, the hiring coordinator. She is the person who looks over peoples resumes and decides wether to hire them or not. She answered the questions like I asked, and didn’t start telling any stories.

The final interview was with my dad, Lorne. He is, as previously stated, the all-purpose, troubleshooting and process improvement person. He also didn’t go on any story, but to be fair, I didn’t ask either of them to.

So yeah. I would probably not enjoy working at MEC, but there are a few jobs that do seem interesting to me. I think being a web developer would be kinda interesting, but I would dislike working their in general.

Justin Trudeau

Justin Pierre James Trudeau (or Justin Trudeau) is the Prime Minister of Canada. He is a part of the Liberal party.

Many people have thought of who is influential in there life, and for me, that would be our prime minister, Justin Trudeau. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario on December 25th, 1971, making him 46 currently. His brothers are Alexandre and Michel Trudeau, and his parents are Pierre Trudeau and Margaret Sinclair.

So you may be wondering, “How is Justin Trudeau a very influential person in your life?” Well I will tell you. While yes, he hasn’t had much impact on my life personally, he’s kinda the Prime Minister, so he has a large impact on all of Canada.

Something that is kinda cool about him was that he lived in whistler for a while, and so did my aunt. They used to hang out at parties and were good friends when they both lived in whistler. He also met my Grade 7 teacher and she played soccer with him and his dad.

If I could ask our Prime Minister one question, I would ask him “if another world war started while you were prime minister, what would you have Canada do? Would we fight, or would we shelter those who needed it?”. I imagine he would say something like “Canada would send troops to battle, but we would take care of people first.” This would be said because Canada is a very caring country, and most of us would be willing to help those who need help.

Justin Trudeau is the 23 prime minister of Canada. I’m not sure who the next one will be, but im sure whoever it is will be just as influential as Mr. Trudeau.

Augustus Caesar body bio project

Augustus Caesar! He was a very powerful man in Ancient Rome and had a very impactful life on both Rome and the large area around it.

We were put into a group and had to make a “body bio” of him. A body bio is a cutout or trace of someone filled with symbols and few words. In my group was Daniel, Raina, Luca J., Maggie and Myself. We actually made two traces, one of Daniel that didn’t give us enough room on the page, and one of me that did give us enough room.

All we did to make the bio was trace myself, draw and cut out different symbols that relate to Augustus’ life, cut out the body and glue the symbols onto the body in spots that relate to the symbols and there importance to Augustus. I learned a few really cool things about Augustus that you may not know. The first thing is that he had many different names. Throughout this post I have been referring to him as Augustus Caesar, but when we were told to work on this project he was called Octavius Caesar, and that’s not even his birth name. His birth name was Gaius Octavian, and when he was adopted by his great uncle Julius Caesar, he became Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian. After that he dropped the “Octavian”part of his name, which then became his nickname! So yeah, this guy had a lot of names. He’s like the roman version of Poseidon, except that’s Neptune, so maybe not.

If I could do anything different next time, it would be to make more meaningful symbols and to make sure we have enough paper to fully trace which ever person we are tracing, or change the traced person to fit the paper.

-Heart. The heart represents the love he had for Rome and Italy.

-Bread and Fish. As he was a roman emperor, he had a lot of money, allowing him to eat a lot of good food, such as bread and fish.

-Sword. The sword represents the power that he had, and the militaries that he commanded.
