Destination Imagination (DI) is back again and this time, it’s improv. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you should read my first blog post about DI.
Our challenge this year was to perform three improv skits in different genres with different stock characters using the same story prompt every time.
I chose improv as my challenge this year because I thought it would be easier than the other projects such as the structural challenge I participated in last year. However I soon discovered that there is an art to improv and to do it well take a lot of work.
In my opinion, the most challenging part of this project was coming up with a list of good and doable genres. This was because we needed to pick twenty genres out of fifty.
The most important thing that I learned was that practise and preparation are critical to the success of the challenge (e.g.: learning to play the flute so we could use it in the challenge, practicing certain characters like the auctioneer, etc.).
The thing I enjoyed most was performing because I felt energized when the crowd reacted to our skits.
So far in my DI career, this was definitely one of my favourite challenges.
