As you can tell by the title of this post, Its about IMPROV! more specifically, the improv Preformed At Destination Imagination Provincial Tournament in Surry, BC on April 8th, 2017.
This was the second level of our DI journey. Unfortunately, it was the last. We placed fourth in provincials, which was good considering we had the most competitive event. We were told that there were something like nine teams competing in this category.
Sadly, fourth is not first, so it wasn’t good enough. This meant that we did not qualify to go to globals- which takes place in Knoxville, Tennesse.
But – let me tell you about that I learned and what I enjoyed on this crazy DI journey:
My team consisted of:
We called our selves “The Five Improv-A-Teers”. Not really. well, I did but the rest of my group (including the judges) called us “Easy 20/20”.
The rules of this competition are in my first post. The link is posted bellow.
Now onto our prompts.
As you know, in this competition your team is given one prompt, one stock character and one genre. However, your team’s stock character and genre change with every skit so its very challenging.
In the videos below, my team’s prompt, genres and stock characters were as follows;
Video #1:
Prompt: Stock character owns a car dealership and the lights in the house are flickering.
Stock Character:Royal Person
Genre: Paraody
What I liked about this skit was was Claire’s impression of Kim Kardashian. She was very funny and had the audience laughing, which gave the rest of us energy for the skit.
What I did not like about it is that it was hard for all of us to find a good, strong character.
Video #2:
Prompt: Stock character owns a car dealership and the lights in the house are flickering.
Stock Character: Volunteer
Genre: Spy Movie
What I liked about this skit was our use of the stage. We were able to act like one of us was in a vent even though she was right beside the rest of the team – she used the depth of the stage.
I did not like how little the flute was used – I just couldn’t seem to find the right time to incorporate it.
Video #3:
Prompt: Stock character owns a car dealership and the lights in the house are flickering.
Stock Character: Artist
Genre: Zombie Movie
I liked our use of the play dough (we used it as “brains”) and how Claire and Angela played being Zombies.
I did not like how we ended the skit. It ended just with us pretending to run away and that was not a very satisfying ending.
to do DI all over again I would definitely choose improv again because I really enjoyed doing the skits and, for me, it was a less stressful event to choose though, I have had people tell me that they would never choose this event because it would be too stressful for them. I think I am just comfortable being on stage with people watching me.
