So we had a chemistry unit in science recently where we learned about element and stuff like ionic bonds, covalent bonds, reactivity, the valence shell, valence electrons, Bohr models etc. but there is one project in particular that I’d like to talk about: our chemistry video project.
But that title probably doesn’t tell you much about the project, so I’ll tell you. Basically we had to make a video where all the characters are atoms, and we need to work in Ionic and covalent bonds as some sort of relationships or something. One of the other requirements was to have Bohr models incorporated in the video somehow. This video could be anything, it could be animated, it could be live action it could be a musical, but we decided to just do a sort of animation. But first we needed a script.
For the script we decided to do multiple short stories about the lives of a few atoms, these atoms included Fluorine, Sodium, and Hydrogen, with some supporting characters like Neon, Chlorine, Argon, and Iodine. Fluorine’s story is, Fluorine and chlorine get married and it works out great. They do covalent bonding which is represented by them getting married and becoming a couple and become chlorine monofloride. Then we show a sodium atom on its own and how everybody wants to be with it but, it just wishes it was like argon who is fine living in isolation or living alone. Then hydrogen’s story is, Hydrogen gets bullied by Iodine to give up one of it’s electrons. Iodine continues to bully hydrogen and they sort of always find each other and in a way stick together. So the way we decided to animated it was to draw the characters and instead of waisting time drawing a background we just found a picture that we pound work. Then we went into explain everything and put the background picture in and put the characters over top. Then we got some ear buds for microphones and just recorded us moving the characters and saying the lines. Here is what our first draft ended up looking like:
Some of the feedback we got was that the audio was very quiet, and that we didn’t include Bohr models. So on the next draft we made sure to talk louder and we added the Bohr models in on the characters. Here it is:
So for this one the audio still wasn’t the best but we couldn’t really do anything about that, but we did include the Bohr models.
Another thing we had to do for the chemistry unit was to make a mind map with all the stuff we know about chemistry at the end and at the beginning of the unit. These will show you some of the stuff we learned and how which more we know now. Here is the unit start mind map:

Here you can see that I know a lot more about chemistry including more elements, and different bonds, and I know about electrons and the valence shell, and why things are reactive.
So overall I liked the chemistry unit, we learned about all the elements and the different kinds on bonds, we even made a video where atoms where the characters and the bonds where like relationships.
