Learning the Significance of Women’s Suffrage

Because I’m new to this learning style I was very intrigued to see how this project would go. we started by choosing a topic from a big list of significant events in the interwar years. I got last pick and all the topics I wanted were gone, but Ms.Maxwell said I could do the same topic as someone else but in the UK instead of Canada. So my topic was The Suffragette Movement in the UK.

after choosing our topics we had to pitch to the teacher why we wanted this topic, and what our essay would be about. Here’s my project pitch

we started research, and one of the first milestones of our project was creating an annotated bibliography. Most of my research was from these two websites – https://www.britannica.com/topic/Womens-Social-and-Political-Union and https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/politics/eight-things-didnt-know-suffragette-movement/

The next step of this project was to outline our essay. We started by coming up with the different parts of the essay, like hooks, thesis, etc. I enjoyed how we worked in such small portions, it made it easier to stay up to date with the rest of the class. one of the main things I learned how to do in this section was how to write a thesis, in last grades we didn’t focus on the outline and formality of essays as much. Here’s the thesis I came up with:

“Although the Suffragette Movement in the United Kingdom was violent and involved extreme lengths of protest, it brought forth the idea of equality for men and women, while showing future generations the meaning of standing up for human rights.”

One thing I struggled with a little in the outline was topic sentences for each paragraph. I couldn’t really come up with anything on my own and had to have Ms.Maxwell help me quite a bit.

After submitting our outline, it was time to start writing out our essay. Since there were 3 body paragraphs, I chose a specification for each. I narrowed the topics down to how the WSPU (women’s social and political union) started and what it is, the type of protests suffragette women did and how this affected society, and finally the legacy that the suffragette women left and how it was the beginning of modern equality. I chose these sections because I thought they were the 3 most important things people should know about the suffragette movement in Britain.

next step was putting everything together and writing my body paragraphs (since we had constructed our introduction and conclusion in the outline). I looked back on my sources many times and slowly but surely, wrote out all of my body paragraphs.

we submitted our first drafts and then the teacher printed them out so we could participate in peer editing. We had other students correct our grammar and other small things, and then we submitted a version of our essay with those corrections, and Ms.Maxwell corrected it further. She gave corrections like so:

After correcting these I turned in my third draft.

For the next step of this project we had a surprise! Some UBC students studying to be teachers cane to visit and a few students in the class explained our project to them. The UBC students then got copies of our third drafts and corrected them for us. After they were done each student went to talk to the teacher about the corrections. It was a take some leave some kinda thing, not everything they did made sense for our essays but some of the corrections were very helpful!

These were the last corrections so next was our final essay!! And here is mine: (click below to see it)

Suffragette Movement Essay

Almost right after handing them in we were given a template to make a “learning presentation pitch” which surprised me. I’ve never done a presentation for an essay before so I wasn’t sure what to do. I was nervous because we were supposed to come up with something interactive, and more creative than most presentations I’ve done in school. I got my choices teacher Yvette to help me.

I decided I’d do a short keynote and then students would play a Kahoot that I’d create. Kahoot is a quiz game where people use they’re phones or iPads to play.

In my keynote I summarized my essay, and made sure to answer the questions they’d later have for remember for the Kahoot game, here’s a sample page from my keynote:

And here are a few sample questions from my Kahoot!

When it came to presenting it I was quite nervous, but that makes sense because I don’t like presenting.

My presentation actually went way better than I thought it would so I’m proud of that. I was a little shaky but got the point across and everyone seemed to enjoy the Kahoot and I gave chocolate bars to the winners 🙂

in this project I learned how to use the technology that I’m given, my iPad, to do really cool things!!  I also learned so much about how the women of the suffragette movement fought, and that they fought hard. I learned that without their triumphs people wouldn’t have the rights they do today!! So eye opening.

I really gained a lot from this project and I hope it’s the same for the next one 😊
