In this post I will talk about the story of the quilt square and the process of designing the square.
For creating my image I wanted to show Mark becoming king. My first draft was very rough and brief and showed Mark as a stick figure and he was shaking hands with a couple of city folks. I knew this image wasn’t going to cut it, but I find art work challenging.
I then thought of trying to show him in front of a big crowd of people but didn’t want to have to draw 100s of stick men! I used Google image search to find images of people giving speeches to a crowd. I found an image of President Obama giving a speech where he is shown from behind and thought that would be a good design for me to use.
To create the crowd I searched for a colourful crowd of people and then blurred that image using Repix. Then imported that into Paper to be the background of my quilt square. Then I drew Mark using the other image as a reference for positioning him and drawing him as a silhouette. I added a colourful crown and the red cape to make him look regal and to add colour.
After getting feedback I outlined Mark to ensure he stood out from the crowd. I also increased the size of the stage and moved him towards the middle to ensure he wouldn’t get cut off when the quilt is sewn together.
For sewing the quilt I started with hand sewing a border. I am not good at sewing so it took ages and was a bit messy. So I then got some lessons on using the sewing machine and used that to sew the border with a cool zig zag stitch. It could sometimes get a bit hard to keep my square strait, so my thread is a bit curved.
The final step was to sew on a felt red cape to make that stand out and added stick on gems to the crown and cape for more effect. This is my completed quilt square.
Here is my part of the story:
Mark Smith has become the king of the city that he travelled to after the nuclear reactions. The people have chosen him to become the king as he killed the horrible dictator who had been ruling this city. Mark’s brave actions freed the city. The people of the city are cheering for their new king who has just been crowned. He is wearing the ceromonial red cape studded with diamonds which hadn’t been given to the recent leaders but was traditionally worn by great rulers. This cape represents happiness for the city. The crown is gold with ruby and jade gems on it. A new gem is added to the crown when a new great ruler is crowned.
