Driving Question: What fraction of our time is screen time?
From this project, I have concluded that one-fifth of my time is spent on screens. I got this stat from entering my daily screen time in a numbers chart every day, calculating the total and Turing it into a percentage for a pie chart. The percentage was 20%, which can easily be converted into a fraction, 1/5. The answer to this question, with the right technology, was fairly easy to get, as I learned how to navigate Numbers pretty well with this project. This transitions right into the evidence of my learning.
Evidence of my learning
During this project, I learned a lot. I learned how to navigate Numbers much better than before. I learned a lot about Numbers such as: how to add numbers using a spreadsheet or how to turn data into a chart or diagram. My pie charts shown above were made with data taken directly from the spreadsheet and turned into an easier to comprehend visual, complete with percentages for the numbers. Numbers is now something that I can navigate easily without much confusion.
I learned about how I spend my time too. I figured out fractions and percents for what I spend my day doing. For instance, I learned that 27% of my time is spent on screens, while 73% is off-screens. I also learned that 52% of my iPad time is spent on entertainment and 48% is spent on productivity (Drawing, homework, etc.).
Another one of the main focuses of this project was adding and subtracting fractions by finding common denominators. I think I do this fairly well and have improved since the start of the project. We had two quizzes and I did them easily without any problems. Adding and subtracting fractions is now a concept that comes easy to me and I fully understand it.
Milestone 6, presenting to the class helped me get the answer to the driving question best. I was pressured to put a lot of work into the spreadsheet as everyone was going to be looking at it. I’d say I did good on this Milestone and the class liked my spreadsheet. I think overall they were impressed by how much data I put in and how many pie charts I made.
If I were to choose another Milestone that helped along the way, I’d choose Milestone 4, the start of what our spreadsheets will look like. Milestone 4 was a point in the right direction, it was seeing if you had the right idea or if you should change your sheets a little. For Milestone 4, I was accomplished and had everything I needed. I think I demonstrated this competency well by staying on task with my partner at my table. I’m sitting with Ava and we work well and stay on task. We normally only talk about project-related things and we try our best to answer each other’s questions. I think we work efficiently together and don’t get distracted.
Understanding and solving: Visualize to explore mathematical concepts
I demonstrated this competency well by entering my data every day for my screen time and other activities. I turned the data into percentages well and stayed on task. My spreadsheet looks overall neat and the data is accurate. I think this competency has been achieved is on the extending level.
Communicating and Representing: Represent mathematical ideas in concrete, pictorial, and symbolic forms
I think I’m on an extending level for this competency as well. I turned a lot of my data into pie charts so it’s easier to visualize. I created 8 different pie charts, in the end, all of them displaying different data comparisons. I colour coded all of them to be visually appealing and made sure the data is accurate. I also made sure all the pie charts had titles and legends for what colours mean in which categories. Overall, my pie charts, in my opinion, were on an extending level.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I think I did well on this project. I learned a lot about Numbers, fractions, percentages and data. I had fun making the spreadsheet and in my opinion this was a good project.
