Thought 30: Chemistry Stories ⚛️
🚨SOUND THE SCIENCE ALARM NEW SCIMATICS BLOG POST 🚨
This project was all about chemical bonding. To explain the process of how 2 atoms can share their electrons, we were tasked with making an animated video that demonstrates both ionic and covalent bonding.
I decided to use Gold Cyanidation as the theme for my video. Gold Cyanidation is the process of using cyanide to extract gold from gold ore. I used cyanide as my covalent bond and gold iii chloride as my ionic bond. I will explain what all these scientific concepts are in my video, which is linked at the end of this blog post.
Curricular Competencies
Communicating: This competency is about creating models to explain an idea. I exhibited this skill in my video by using detailed voice overs to explain what is being depicted in my animated video. I think I did this at an insightful level in my video.
Processing and Analyzing: This competency is about being able to construct, analyze and interpret models and diagrams. I think I did a good job on this competency in my video except for the scene where I explain ionic bonds, as my atomic models and transfer of electrons where inaccurate. I could have prevented this by double checking my information.
Questioning and Predicting: This last competency is about demonstrating a sustained interest in a scientific topic. I showed this in my video by deciding to go above the requirements when I used more complex concepts such as polyatomic ions and multivalent metals.
Overall, I think this is one of the best projects I’ve done this year. If I had been more careful and detailed in the ionic bonding scene, this would have been perfect.
