This program is designed to place the students in a simulated RCMP training environment as well as role-playing the realities of policing. The students that successfully complete each phase of the selection process will attend the Academy and experience a variety of activities that an RCMP Cadet would experience but in a condensed format

The Vancouver Aquarium is currently recruiting 10 students for our Winter Break Luminescence 2013 Work Experience Placement. As a work experience student, they will be working within a team of students and staff to create the ultimate visitor experience for all of our visitors this winter. Their days will be filled with fun and varied tasks and they will have the opportunity to engage, amaze and inspire thousands of guests of all ages and from all around the world!

December 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29, 30; January 2, 3, 4, 5.

 

Shift times 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Description of Volunteer Opportunity:

·         Supervise ‘Luminescence’ Crafts

·         Face Painting

·         Touchpool demonstrations

·         Supervise ‘Luminescence’ Volunteer Carts

·         Assist staff with ‘Luminescence’ Shows

·         Assist staff cleaning the Goldcorp 4D Theatre

·         Assist staff with visitor surveys

·         Assist staff with office tasks, including laundry and some light cleaning

·         Complete self-led educational modules to increase knowledge of aquatic life

Skills Preferred:

·         Outgoing, enthusiastic and self-motivated

·         Students currently in Grade 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.

·         Genuine interest in working with the public

·         Strong communications skills

·         Experience with delivering excellent customer service

·         Second language an asset

·         Ability to learn quickly from self led activities, studying written documents, and some group activity work.

 

Please Note: This is not an animal handling position.  Students will have limited contact with marine animals.

Mini Med School

 

 

The Child & Family Research Institute is pleased to present Mini Med School XIV, a 6 part series on Diabetes: Mythology and Modern Research. This series takes place on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm beginning October 9 in the Chan Centre for Family Health Education at the Child & Family Research Institute (938 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver).

Registration opens online Monday, September 16 at 9:30am. Please note registration is for all 6 sessions. Admission is free but space is limited.

Mt. Seymour Ski Practicum Program

Ski Instructor Development Practicum

Certification by the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance and Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors is now recognized by the BC Ministry of Education, which awards External Sports Credits for CSIA and CASI Level 1 and CSIA and CASI Level 2.

To date Mt Seymour has had 18 students participate in this program. 15 completed their CSIA Level 1 certification and all gained many hours of teaching experience, training and an understanding of the ski industry. A number of these students have gone on to join the instructor team.
In 2013-2014 Mt Seymour will accept up to 16 Students.
Ski Instructor Development Practicum
 This program is for all students ages 15 and up who can ski at an advanced intermediate level and who wish to explore a career in the ski industry
 Students must commit to 100 hours (roughly 12 days) of volunteer work for Mt Seymour Resorts Ski and Snowboard School
o Any 6 of the following dates: Dec. 21-23, 26-31 and Jan. 2-5
o Either a Saturday or Sunday Winter Camp
o One further day during the 2013-2014 season
In exchange Mt Seymour will provide each student with
o A Staff Season Pass, valid for entire 2013-2014 season, including staff benefits and free shuttle bus service.
o 4 on-snow training sessions to prepare for the CSIA Level 1 Course
o Level 1 Canadian Ski Instructor’s Alliance Course and Exams free (course cost is $385)
o Opportunity to work as a ski instructor once certified
 Students will gain knowledge of resort operation, experience instructing lessons and working with the public, expert ski training, 2 credits towards graduation (pending successful completion of CSIA 1).

Science Alive Volunteers and Jobs at SFU

Science ALIVE is a not-for-profit science education program based out of Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus. The goal of the program is to expose youth to the exciting worlds of  SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, and TECHNOLOGY and to inspire them to want to learn more. Science ALIVE develops exciting hands-on activities that are completely different from what kids experience at school. Science ALIVE runs many programs-throughout the year, including summer camps in July and August.

We are currently looking for high school instructors (paid and volunteer positions
available) to support our summer camps, which run from July 2nd – August 23rd, 2013.
Job Descriptions – What you can do:
Volunteer: This position requires a commitment of at least two full weeks of volunteering
with our summer camps (Mon to Fri: 8:30 am – 3:30 pm), plus 2 days of training. It will
involve assisting instructors in the running of camp, as well as leading games and the
general supervision of campers. Accepted volunteers will gain valuable experience
working with kids and in science labs, and be exposed to the university environment all
in a fun and dynamic atmosphere.
Interested candidates must currently be in/completing grades 9-12, and must undergo a
successful group interview before being selected to volunteer for the program.

High School Instructor:
This is a PAID position and requires a full time commitment for 2
months, from the end of June (after exams) until August 23rd. In this position, you will
gain the experience of working in an amazing team to develop and implement hands on
science activities for the summer camps, and gain experience teaching science to
children. You will also be responsible (with other leaders) for the safety and
entertainment of the children.
Interested candidates must currently be in/completing grades 11 or 12, and must
undergo a successful group and personal interview before being selected to work with
the program.
What we are looking for:
If you are interested in science, engineering, and technology, and would like to spend the
summer having fun with kids and getting them excited about science, this is the job for
you! We are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic, responsible, and good with kids.
