Three different volunteer opportunities are currently available with the North Van Public Library!
* Book Buddies at Capilano Library – students will help young children maintain and improve their reading skills: Tuesdays 3:30-6:00 pm, January 6 through March 3
* Tech Tutors at Lynn Valley Library – students will help adults explore the library’s digital resources and provide help with their technology and computer-related questions:Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 pm, January 22 through March 5
* Lego Robotics at Parkgate Library – students will help students in grades 5-7 use an online manual and kit to create their own robots from Lego: Wednesdays 3:30-5:30 pm, January 28 through March 4

Gene Research for a Week (The Next Generation)

ARE YOU a mature, capable high school student age 16 and over who is passionate about science and intrigued by genetics?

DO YOU HAVE an overall average of at least 85%, can write a brilliant essay to demonstrate your excitement about science and your advanced communication skills, and you can convince a teacher to write a stunning reference for you?

IF YES, Gene Researcher for a Week (GRFAW) program is your opportunity to gain insight into the world of genetic diseases through a mentorship in one of Canada’s top genetic labs. This program is designed to provide a learning experience for students that have not had extensive lab experience from other programs or work experience opportunities.

Participants can learn how genes cause human genetic disorders and how top scientists translate these findings into treatments and cures for genetic diseases. In this program you will participate in the activities in the lab with as much hands on experience as possible(*). The GRFAW mentoring program is a great opportunity for YOU to learn about human genetics research and connect with the scientific community. Vancouver Aquarium Winter break Work Experience Opportunities

The Vancouver Aquarium is currently recruiting students for two Work Experience placements over the winter break! Students will be working within a team of students and staff to create the ultimate visitor experience for all of our visitors this winter. Their days will be filled with fun and varied tasks and they will have the opportunity to engage, amaze and inspire thousands of guests of all ages and from all around the world!

 

The two opportunities being offered are: Interpretive Delivery Winter Break Work Experience Placement and Winter 2014 Gallery Assistant Placement

 

Some of the tasks you will be responsible for are: supervising crafts, face painting, delivering educational interactions in the Amazon Gallery,Touchpool demonstrations on the Wild Coast & Clownfish Cove, Complete self-led educational modules to increase knowledge of aquatic life, Kiosk Attendant, 4D assistant, Information Desk Attendant and more!!!

“Careers in Science” STEM lecture at Vancouver Aquarium

There will be a FREE ONLINE LECTURE about STEM careers from the Vancouver Aquarium on Friday, Nov.28th at 9am.

Four speakers who make their living in marine sciences, from educators to veterinarians, will be speaking about what they do and the steps they took to attain their positions.

 

If you or any of your classes would like to participate, simply logon to the Vancouver Aquarium Youtube channel  on the morning of Nov.28th, click on the “Careers in Science” link on the front page, and enjoy the 45 minute presentation.

 

Think you would benefit from talk to the speakers in person?

 

For a discounted rate of $15, individual students can sign up to part of the live audience in the Aquarium, and will have the chance to talk to the speakers following the presentation. Take a Closer Look at BCIT

Interested in being a BCIT Student for a Day? Thinking about applying to BCIT and want to make sure it’s for you? Want to test out a program that interests you by sampling what BCIT student life is all about?

If so, we invite you to spend a half day at BCIT. As a student for the day, individuals are paired up with a BCIT student currently enrolled in a participating full-time technology or trades program. The visiting student spends a half day at BCIT, and is exposed to everything from the BCIT lifestyle, to the campus, to the workings of the classroom in a field of their choice.

Participating in Student for a Day gives you the opportunity to get a feel for what life as a BCIT student is really like. The program runs from September-April, Monday to Friday and is available in the morning or afternoon, subject to program availability.

Before applying to be a BCIT Student for a Day, we encourage prospective students to learn more about BCIT.
