Future Science Leaders

Future Science Leaders

Future Science Leaders is a program designed for grade 10 and 11 students who enjoy science and technology. Students attend weekly meetings after school where they learn essential skills, meet top experts and innovators and apply their new knowledge. Students are increasingly supported and challenged, and often go on to excel in national and international science, technology, engineering and math challenges.

Future Science Leaders is a multi-year program. Students enter in the Discover Year (grades 10 and 11). The year is divided into six themes. The second year of the program, the Innovate Year, allows students to apply to either a Research or Engineering stream.

The program is delivered after school hours and runs from September 2019 to May 2020. Students can choose to take the program at either the Vancouver or Surrey location.

There is a $500 cost for the program. However, bursaries are available. No student will be excluded on the basis of financial need. Check out our website for more information and a handy application checklist.

Students can apply here. Applications are due on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 11:59pm. Students do not need to be at the top of their class, just excited about science and technology.

Please contact fslinfo@scienceworld.ca for more information.

Camp Ignite Program for girls in gr. 11 & 12

The District of North Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services is proud to be sponsoring one high school girl to participate in this year’s Camp Ignite program.

This is a FREE four day camp mentorship program where young women get to explore the career of firefighting with fun hands-on skills activities, team work, and employment mentorship in general.   All meals and activity fees, if any, are included.  We visit fire halls in the lower mainland each day for activities and stay in housing at Simon Fraser University for the three nights.  We are always gratified to see the smiles and excitement when each girl masters each task. And they do!  The girls have access to many professional emergency services personnel including fire, ambulance and specialty services such as meeting Lola, a trauma therapy dog.  Lastly, each student will leave the program with certificates in Fire Extinguisher Training, CPR and a certificate of completion.  This is all great for resume building.

Camp Ignite Mentorship Program was designed by Metro Vancouver female firefighters specifically for girls. The Camp was designed to help girls realize a future of limitless opportunities and that regardless of your gender, anything is possible. Camp Ignite is a four-day camp that educates and inspires young women through firefighting activities designed to encourage teamwork, courage, commitment, strength of character, and health and fitness.

This year’s Camp will run from August 8-11, 2019 in the Vancouver area.

The Camp is open to girls in grades 11 through 12 (ages 16 – 18).

Application deadline is June 1, 2019.

Our three municipalities will be sponsoring up to three girls from the North Shore to attend Camp.    Applications are also available online at www.campignite.com.

About the Phenomenal Physics Summer Camp: The Phenomenal Physics Summer Camp is an annual summer camp program run by UBC Department of Physics & Astronomy. Camp participants engage in fun scientific activities designed to encourage thinking and experimenting. In the past, they have experimented with electricity, designed hovercrafts, constructed Martian habitats, conducted chemistry experiments and played with tornado tubes and musical instruments. Our goal is to stimulate the minds of these young scientists, and inspire them to explore science further in the future.

Job description: Volunteers are expected to commit to at least one week of volunteering for our summer camp program (Volunteer hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm, two-week commitment preferred). All volunteers are required to attend a training day prior to volunteering. Volunteers will be supervised by the summer camp teachers and camp leaders (UBC undergraduate students). Responsibilities of volunteers include:

• assisting camp teachers and camp leaders in running camp activities

• setting up before activities and cleaning up after activities

• interacting with and supervising campers

• helping maintain a safe and positive camp environment at all times

Why is this experience good for you? As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work with teachers, UBC students, and professors in the UBC Department of Physics & Astronomy. You will also gain valuable experience working with a group of kids. By being involved, you will spend time at UBC and visit university laboratories and facilities. This is also a great place to earn volunteer or career preparation hours. Last but not least, you will receive a free summer camp T-shirt!

Eligibility: We are accepting students who are currently in/completing grades 10-12, as well as first year university students (although priority will be given to high school students). Suitable candidates will be invited to attend an interview on campus.

Qualities we look for: We are looking for volunteers who…

are interested in science and engineering

are independent and reliable but also able to work as part of a team

are not afraid to work in a pool during the swimming sessions (ability to swim is an asset, but NOT a requirement as we will be spending our time in the shallow end)
