New Westminster Student Police Academy

Are you a grade 11 or 12 student who is curious about a career in policing? Want to learn from the best about investigative methods and advanced driving techniques? Then consider applying for the New Westminster Police Department Student Police Academy. Application deadline is April 1, 2019 and the fee to apply is $50.

The Academy runs from July 2 – July 12, 2019.

This two week program gives you a behind the scenes look at all aspects of being a police officer. From physical conditioning and self-defense tactics, to scenario-based simulations and firearm safety, you’ll receive from police the most up to date tactical training.

You will learn about the many different aspects of policing from exciting guest speakers. Meet members of the K9 Unit, see the police helicopter – Air 1 up close, and get out on the water with the NWPD Marine Unit.

This is your opportunity to see what it takes to be a police officer.

Successful candidates will exemplify the following core values:

Professionalism – Police officers are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and appropriate manner both at work and in their personal lives.

Responsibility – Police officers are responsible for their own actions and for their contribution to a positive culture in their class.

Accountability – We are looking for candidates who understand the importance of taking ownership for their actions, both positive and negative.

Integrity –A police officer must be honest and truthful, realizing that the goal of each investigation is to discover truth rather than eliminating doubt.

Service – Police officers exemplify one of the most effective forms of leadership: servant leadership.  Police officers lead by example and willingly assist with the most marginalized of all populations.

Endurance – Policing is both physically and mentally challenging.

ACE – IT Carpentry Program

The Youth Train In Trades (formerly known as ACE IT) carpentry program provides training for Grade 11 and 12 students interested in a career in carpentry and related trades. Based at West Vancouver Secondary, students receive training every second day, while attending their own secondary school for core academic subjects. This program is open to students across the North Shore, regardless of their home school.

This intensive program allows students to receive technical training typically done at a post-secondary institution while working toward high school graduation. Each student accepted into the program is registered as a trainee with the Industry Training Authority (ITA).
