Skills Canada Competition. Vancouver May 28th and 29th

The 26th Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) will be held May 28 & 29, 2020 at the Vancouver Convention Center, in Vancouver, British Columbia. The opening ceremony will be held on May 27 and the closing ceremony on May 30.

Skills Canada BC is an affiliate of the organizers of the Skills Canada National Competition, an annual event. SCNC is an Olympic-style competition which showcases Canada’s best in skilled trades and technologies as they compete to become the national champion in their respective sector. Students placing gold at the BC Provincial Skills Competitions will advance to SCNC to represent their province in their Skill Area.

Justice Institute of British Columbia Open House

JIBC continues to receive inquiries from high school counsellors, career advisors, educators, students and parents, like yourselves, who are interested in learning about the Institute and its programs that lead to careers in public safety. The focus of this event is to provide meaningful information to prospective students.

JIBC is a public post-secondary institution that offers innovative education and training in the fields of law enforcement, firefighting, paramedicine, corrections, emergency management, leadership, conflict resolution and other related disciplines.

Students will learn how JIBC programs can prepare them for a career in public safety.
Our programs are focused on applied learning and our expert faculty are active in their professional fields. We also provide a range of student support services that contribute to the success of our students.

Event highlights:

  • Visit the career fair in the gymnasium between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Speak with Program Advisors from various JIBC programs and learn what it takes to be competitive in these careers
  • Networking with recruiters from various public safety fields to learn what it takes to be competitive in these careers
  • Take a tour of the New Westminster campus
  • Watch one of our presentations in the theatre to learn about the many JIBC programs available in law enforcement, paramedicine, emergency management, firefighting, conflict resolution, leadership and more
  • Watch live demonstrations from program areas in law enforcement, paramedicine, firefighting and emergency management

STEM Conference for Girls!

We strive to empower female high school students to pursue their dreams in the STEM fields.

With workshops in Plastic Pollution, Neuropsychology, Web Development, Human Health & the Environment, Microbiology, Design and more, conference attendees will explore the connections between STEM and activism. Career talks and hands-on activities will be led by professionals, students and professors in various STEM fields.

Futures is much more than a career fair as it allows you to interact with career mentors from various sustainability related careers who have excelled in, and are passionate about, their green careers. Over 30 careers will be represented including chemical engineer, architect, developer, hydrologist, environmental lawyer, financial advisor, landscape designer, robotics engineer, and many more!

BC Children’s Hospital Open House

 

 

The next Research Open House is scheduled for Monday, March 9, 2020 from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute.

2020 Agenda 

  • 8:45 am – Student registration at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute
  • 9:30 am – Research presentation
  • 10:15 am – Students will be assigned to smaller groups and have the opportunity to visit and interact with three different research teams on the Oak Street Campus. Due to the large number of participants, students will NOT have the opportunity to select activities. Activities will be randomly assigned. The 2019 activities included:
    • Using blood to understand immune responses in premature babies
    • Using fruit flies to understand how our body deals with environmental stress
    • Wheat DNA extraction experiment
    • Determining protein concentration using colorimetric assay
    • An exploration of clinical research in pediatric orthopaedic surgery
    • Biomedical signal analysis
    • Using next-generation sequencing to diagnosis rare disease
    • DNA jigsaws: genomic research using your laptop
    • The proof is in your DNA: Paternity testing using gel electrophoresis
    • Growth factor regulation of metastatic properties of high-risk endometrial cancers
    • Natural killer cells in pregnancy: friends or foes?
    • Blood components
    • Participating in vaccine research – the research process for a visit from start to finish
    • Determining energy requirements in humans
    • Tools for determining body composition
  • 12:00 pm – Students dismissed

Students need to be nominated to this open house.  They will take 3 of our students so these get offered to Gr. 12’s first.  Deadline for nomination is February 3rd.  This is a free event and lunch is served.  Please see Ms. Bramley for more information.

Operation Med School Open House at UBC

We are a student-run, non-profit organization that will be hosting our 8th annual Operation Med School conference this year. Our goal is to inspire, inform and encourage students to follow their medical dreams and head bravely into their future endeavors. The conference will take place on Saturday, March 9th at the UBC Robert H. Lee Centre from 9:00am-5:15pm. It is the perfect chance for high school students to explore the medical field, meet peers who share the same passion, and speak with knowledgeable medical professionals. We regularly update our social media accounts so please encourage your students to find us on our website, Facebook and Instagram! 
There may be a cost to this.  Lunch will be provided.
