Summer Program Instructor – Mt. Seymour

Summer Camp Leader

Position Summary:
Mt Seymour Resort is seeking strong environmental role models to be Summer Program Instructors for our wilderness-based summer day camps. Mt Seymour’s Eco-Adventure Camp provides wilderness-based day camp programs for children aged 5-12. Our experiential camps engage kids in nature education, wilderness survival skills, and personal growth.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Program development, program delivery, direct leadership and care of children and youth, and general administrative tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES (REQUIRED):
• Ability to commit to 9 full weeks of programming Monday-Friday, July 4th – September 2nd
• Experience working with children aged 5-12
• Exemplifies such qualities as: social and environmental responsibility, safety awareness, flexibility, sense of humor, and a passion for continuous learning and mentorship
• Demonstrated group leadership skills in an outdoor (preferably wilderness) setting
• Knowledge of wilderness skills, safety, and etiquette
• Amazing team player and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Capable of mentoring and assisting volunteer leaders
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• A love of nature and of working with children and combining the two!
• Capable of hiking over rough mountainous terrain for extended periods while carrying group and programing supplies
• Ability to handle potential stressful situations calmly and effectively

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES (DESIRED):
• Degree or diploma in outdoor recreation or adventure tourism or in progress ·Degree in biology, environmental studies, education, or related area of study, or equivalent or in progress
• Formal camp experience
• Knowledge of local First Nations history and culture
• Training or experience working with children with special needs
• Reliable transportation
• Class 5 driver’s license (Class 4 would be an asset)
• Current first aid certificate
• Familiarity with Mt Seymour summer hiking trails
• Knowledge of Mt Seymour flora and fauna
• Primitive survival skills and bushcraft knowledge an asset
Camp Instructors will work collaboratively to do the following:
Develop and refine age-appropriate summer program content
Deliver daily programming
Be responsible for the care, safety of, and injury prevention of campers
Develop props and supporting material/equipment
Maintain a positive camp environment

OTHER:
• Must be available for entire employment duration from June 20th to September 2nd
• Part-time hours from June 20th to start of camp. Full time (40 hours) for duration of camps
• Must be willing to complete a criminal record check
• Must be willing to occasionally supervise children traveling to and from camp on our busses
• Must be willing to work on a mountain top in challenging weather and environmental conditions
• Starting hourly wage range is $17.50 – $19

This year Camp Ignite is planning a 3 night and 3 day event with overnight including afternoon arrival on August 4th, followed by three full days of firefighting activities at assorted locations in the lower mainland, ending on August 7th. *subject to change based on Public Health directives. Camp Ignite is traditionally a four-day overnight camp that educates and inspires young women to follow their dreams. We aim to show our campers a future of limitless opportunities and demonstrate that anything is possible. The camp is open to girls in grades 11-12 (ages 15-18 ) living in British Columbia. Green Teams Canada Hiring Youth Environmental Leaders


Green Teams Canada is Hiring Two Community Environmental Leaders for the Lower Mainland Green Team (LMGT)

Locations: Greater Victoria and Lower Mainland (Work virtually from home and a variety of settings)

Term: Full-time starting between May 23-June 14 (start date & hrs in May-June may be set up to work around your availability; however, from July 4th it will be full-time) and ending Sept 3, 2022 and then part-time (approx. 16 hrs a week) until April 2, 2023

Compensation: $18/hour

We are seeking four youth, aged 15-30, who are passionate about environment and community to co-lead the award-winning Greater Victoria Green Team (GVGT) and Lower Mainland Green Team (LMGT) and support the growth of Green Teams of Canada!

This position will most appeal to someone who is interested in:

  • Gaining leadership and community organizing experience
  • Working collaboratively in a close-knit team
  • Improving their communication skills (e.g. public speaking, communicating science, written, active listening and using non-verbal cues)
  • Developing critical and creative thinking skills
  • Learning how to conduct outreach (e.g. using multiple social media outlets effectively and reaching a wider diverse demographic)
  • Working from home virtually a large percentage of the time and outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Gaining practical ecological restoration skills
  • Learning what it takes to turn an idea into action

We require some experience and/or education that demonstrates you are keen to  become a leader and are committed to environmental community engagement.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of Position

  • Co-lead at least 20 environmental community action projects (invasive plant removals, planting of native species and clean-ups)
  • Provide environmental educational and supervision to community members
  • Take quality photos & videos of community members
  • Participate in GTC’s first Youth Advisory Committee and provide recommendations on and support the development of policies and Operational Plan
  • Co-create and implement a Community Outreach Plan that focuses on reaching a wider diverse audience
  • Co-manage social media
  • Strategize and support the creation of new partnerships to enhance and increase the number of activities run
  • Support fundraising activities (e.g. grant writing)
  • Research and add new educational content to hands-on outdoor environmental education activities
  • Follow safety protocols to prevent the spread of communicable disease
  • Perform other related duties as required by supervising staff

All candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements. They must be: 

  • Between the ages of 15-30 by the beginning of employment;
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of employment;
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Available and willing to work weekends;
  • Willing to show COVID-19 Vaccination proof;
  • Willing to undergo a Criminal Record Check;
  • Able to lift tents, tools, tables, bags of supplies etc.

ABOUT THE JOB
We are currently looking for Summer Camp Leaders for our various indoor and outdoor camps including programs for school-aged children and youth between June 27 and September 2, 2022. The hours of work will vary according to where you are placed and the registration numbers.
ABOUT YOU You are a team player committed to community. You are courteous and effective with the public and enjoy working with a diverse group of people. You must be able to prepare and lead a wide variety of programs and activities including sports, arts and crafts, games, outdoor exploration and walking trips to parks, forests and community centres. You are highly enthusiastic and capable of motivating and encouraging others. You will be responsible for promoting a positive, healthy and safe environment for campers. In addition, you must be able to work effectively with children, and work closely and cooperatively with parents and facility staff, while providing safe, quality camp programs.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS  Strong organizational and interpersonal skills  Demonstrated ability to organize and provide leadership for children and youth activities  Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C  High Five Certification (available online through BCRPA)
 Successful applicants must be available for paid training between June 24th and 26th
Preference will be given to candidates with previous camp experience and working in a leadership role with children in a variety of settings such as arts and crafts, dance, sports and/or ESL.
All candidates are required to submit a Police Information Check as a requirement of the position. All candidates must be prepared to work at any of our facilities.
HOURS OF WORK: The shifts may vary from 4 hours per day up to 40 hours per week depending on availability and program requirements.
HOURLY RATE: The pay for this unionized position is $20.72 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits.

YouthToSea Leadership Program – Applications Open

YouthToSea is back!

Ocean Wise is proud to announce that applications are open for our 2022 YouthToSea Leadership Program with applications due April 24th, 2022.

YouthToSea is designed to offer youth (15-18 years old) in the Lower Mainland an opportunity to build their personal leadership, problem-solving and life skills. Youth in the program will participate in outdoor excursions, skills building workshops, and create their own ocean service project. Youth who join the program will expand their social networks, increase their marine conservation knowledge, connect with their community, and gain employment skills. In addition to our regular program, this year we are offering 5 different Work Experience streams for students completing their Work Experience course in school.

Our updated WEX Program offers the following streams:

  • Marine Survey: Students will get a hands-on experience conducting a scientific monitoring project. They will learn how to set up a research project, conduct environmental surveys and identify a variety of marine invertebrates.
  • Wetland Survey: Students will get a hands-on experience conducting a scientific monitoring project. They will learn how to set up a research project, conduct environmental surveys and identify a variety of freshwater invertebrates, plants, and birds.
  • Camps Placement: In collaboration with Sea Smart, this placement will give students the opportunity to work in a day camp setting. The placement includes a 2-week placement with a day camp, where students will get the opportunity to create and lead their own activities (with support from staff). 
  • Communications: Students will get hands on experience with content creation through photography, videography, editing and blog writing. Students will attend YouthToSea events and excursions creating material for online forums.
  • Shoreline Cleanup: Students will get hands on experience working in a non-profit ocean conservation environment. This placement includes creating a research plan, attending, and organizing cleanups, sorting material, and analyzing data. Students will also work with our Plastic Research team to develop new plastic interventions.

There is limited space in the program. We are offering 30 spots in our Classic Program and 54 spots in across our Work Experience streams. Check out the Teacher’s Guide for exact dates.

YouthToSea 2022 will run from May 2022 – October 2022 and is supported by the Government of Canada through the Canada Service Corps initiative. All training, certifications, and retreats are fully funded, and there are no costs for participants.

Youth that complete the Leadership Program will receive:

  • 120+ hours of volunteer service
  • Access to Ocean Wise mentorship, resources, and grant funding
  • A 3-day, 2-night immersive learning journey May 13-15, 2022
  • Opportunity to take part in several outdoor excursions (ex. Kayaking, Sailing)
  • Skill building workshops to help with resume building and employment skills
  • Valuable work experience and professional contacts
