Harry Potter Blue Sky

For the past month we have been working on a project called The Blue Sky Project. These projects are very open as the only outline that we have to come up with is a question that we have to try and answer. Twice a year we have an exhibition for these projects and this year the grade 9s theme for the project was Harry Potter.

My question for this project was “What spells and potions would society choose and what does that say about our worldview?” To try and answer this question I first started off with research and brain storming, I came up with making a survey about different spells and potions. I also came up with a hypothesis about what I thought would be the highest result.

I organized the theme into 5 categories: mind, tasks, beauty/physical appearance, opinion/feeling and healing with each category having 4 spells and/or potions questions in each of the them.

The number of people that I decided to be a good amount to analyze the results was one hundred participants total divided into five age groups: 12 and under, 13 to 19, 20 to 35, 36 to 55 and 56 years and older. In each of these age groups I had 10 females and 10 males. At first it was hard to find enough people in each age group so I started off asking my relatives and friends to fill out the survey, then asking people if they could ask people they knew to fill it out and finally I came up with the 100 people.

After getting all the results in I made a few charts to represent the different worldviews people had by comparing which categories were the most popular. Then I compared my hypothesis with the results and wrote an analysis paragraph.

these are the charts I made:

In the end to represent my work I made a poster board which I know isn’t very PLP like so I also made a chart using test tubes that I filled up with coloured sparkling liquid to certain levels to show the results of the categories.

To do a brief overview of my hypothesis and results: the most popular category was ‘mind’ which was very surprising to me as I thought beauty/physical appearance would be the most popular as social media, the Internet and advertising tells us we always need to change. I was right in predicting that the beauty/physical appearance would be the most popular category in the teens and the 13 to 19 group was the age group that picked it the most.

this is my analysis paragraph:

This is my results paragraph:

In the end I am very proud of the results of my project and am very happy with the work I put into the project. One thing I think I could improve on is to stop procrastinating so much and find time earlier when the project is given out even if my schedule is very busy as I left the creation of the poster board until late.

At the exhibition we were put in groups. My group decorated our area with spider webs and fairy lights and made it look dark and gloomy like the library and the prison in Harry Potter. I think it looked amazing even though we didn’t get the location of the library that we wanted.
