A Blast From The Past

OOOOOOOOH boy! Did this project take longer than expected or what! Nothing. Man I guess I got moved to the part of the internet with a tough crowd. Well even if there is no one reading this or Justin Trudeau himself reading this, I am going to write about our movie because I want to! (and was forced to). Before we get into this I have to give credit to my groupies. Because without them this would have taken quintuple the time it did. So here they are; Luciano, Stanfield, Kirby, Matthew. Have you visited their sites yet? Good, now get back on to mine and let’s go.

We were first introduced to the Manhattan project topic right as we got back from summer. The task was understand how and why the bombs work. After some research and documentaries we found out that the reason the bombs exploded with such a high velocity was because of the collision of neutrons into atoms.

Now that’s a very brief explanation but if I explained the whole process I wouldn’t have time for anything else.

It didn’t take long before we started talking about essential people for the project like Enrico Fermi and J. R. Oppenheimer. To learn more about this we did character cards on a person of our choice. The only criteria was that they had to have worked on the project. My choice for the Character Card was Francis Birch. If you want to see the originals they are in the hall outside the PLP (Flight) room. For those of you who can’t make the journey here is the next best thing, a picture.

For some of you, you are asking yourself what does the Manhattan Project have to do with Hanford? Well, for one it is the reason it exists. Hanford, Oregon was one of three secret cities built for the sole purpose of building the first atomic bomb. As Los Alamos and Oakridge were a bit out of driving range for a school trip we visited Plutonium central. The trip was very fun and educational. (Sometimes more one than the other) we got to meet a lot of interesting people who had plethora of information about our topics.

A usual we can’t go anywhere without the shadow of a project and it was a picky one. Our task was to make a movie in the style of a History In Five video. Sounds simple enough right? Wrong! The first draft we knew was rough but we felt confident about it. That was until Mr. Hughes critiqued it to pieces. But we held our chins up and revised. (P.S. When I say we, I mostly mean Kirby. She was the real N.V.P. of this project.) After a long period of time and a few extensions it was finally done. And it is something to be proud of.

Every time I do a blog post it always has something at the bottom here. So the other day I was thinking “how can I make this more interesting?” Well now I am going to be adding secret links to the blog! I was inspired by Philip Defranco and his secret links at the ends of his videos. So they won’t be like this because that is just too random and it won’t be like this because that’s just weird. It will probably be like this most of the time.
