Sherwood Park presents Aladdin

On April 23rd & 24th L’Ecole Sherwood Park School presented this year’s musical theatre production – Aladdin! For four months most of their intermediate student body were involved with the show and even recruited students from Seycove (all former Sherwood “stars”) as the backstage crew. I am told 120 Sherwood students willingly gave up their lunch hour and before/after school time so they could be a part of the production. I was able to watch an afternoon rehearsal and was amazed by the students’ professionalism and passion for the stage.

So many staff and parent volunteers worked tirelessly to make Aladdin a success – special congratulations to Artistic Directors Pamela McLeod, Gillian Irwin, Bruce Sled and Doug Irwin.

Concours d’art oratoire 2013

The Canadian Parents for French Concours d’art oratoire (French public speaking competition) is a long-standing tradition in our school district.  On April 16th 2013, 37 French Immersion (FI), Late French Immersion (LFI) and Francophone students from across North Vancouver participated in the North Vancouver School District Concours d’art oratoire final.  It was a beautiful day and students came with great enthusiasm to present a wide variety of well-prepared and entertaining speeches.

Huge congratulations to both Austyn Jasper (Immersion 9e – Windsor) and Irene Carrasco (Immersion 12e – Handsworth) who placed 1st in their respective categories at the provincial competition!  As Irene Carrasco is in grade 12, she has been offered a $2,000 entrance scholarship to the University of Ottawa and she now has the opportunity to go on to travel to the national Concours in Ottawa to compete for a $20,000 scholarship to the University of Ottawa, among other prizes!

This year’s Concours d’art oratoire was a very successful event.  We are proud of the effort and dedication of all students who competed in both the district and provincial competitions.   The speeches were well written and well presented to an audience of their peers, teachers and parents.

Félicitations à tous!

Generous Donation to Support Literacy

Early April, we were made aware that North Vancouver School District was soon to be the recipient of a wonderful gift.  I would like to acknowledge this very generous donation of $60,000 from the Estate of Sophia Lucyk. Through further communication with the Executor, it was determined that the funds were to be targeted towards three areas:

  • Library based supports for students
  • Support for the continued growth of learners particularly in the area of reading fluency
  • Literacy and reading support for students of aboriginal ancestry

We have been made aware it was Ms. Lucyk’s wish to support students’ love of reading, especially in the library where she believed is at the core of each school. Targeting funds towards literacy programs, reading fluency interventions, and resources for students of aboriginal ancestry will certainly have a tremendous impact!

It is with sincere thanks we accept this donation and contribution to North Vancouver School District.

2013 Elementary Volleyball Tournament

Student players from Boundary Elementary with student coaches from Argyle Secondary at the 2013 District-wide Elementary Volleyball Tournament

Prior to spring break, the grand finale of the 2013 Elementary volleyball season was played out in a tournament that brought together 720 student athletes and volunteers. The tournament gives students an event to work towards and an exciting opportunity to meet other students with an interest in volleyball. We thank Sutherland Secondary teacher and tournament organizer Dan Huzar for his leadership in bringing this event together; as well as the BC Olympic Volleyball Club for their support with coordination and officiating.

Artists for Kids – After School Art Programs

Daylen Luchsinger, AFK Program Facilitator with young AFK Artist, Jasmine

Monday evening, March 11 was a celebration of the winter after school art program.  Approximately 250 people dropped by to enjoy the student exhibition hung amidst the Artists for Kids Permanent Teaching Collection. For some students this was their first foray into the life of an exhibiting young artist while for many of the students this show is a part of their regular exhibition cycle as Artist for Kids After School Art Veterans.

The celebrated Artists for Kids Program is an incredibly rich visual arts education program made possible through the generous support of the Gordon and Marion Smith Foundation for Young Artists (a registered charity) and through the sale of prints to the public provided through partnerships with our artist patrons.  The AFK Program and the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art are unique community treasures of North Vancouver!

District Band and Strings Festival

This year’s District Elementary Band and Strings Festival took place on March 7th and 8th at the Lucas Centre. In all, 26 elementary schools participated in this annual celebration of music. School groups performed for each other over the two days and enjoyed the opportunity to share, learn and listen. Thursday night’s concert featuring the 2013 District Honour Band and Honour Strings performers drew a crowd of over 500 students and parents, and was standing room only! Two professional groups conducted workshops with the band and strings groups prior to their concerts – the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Infinitus Strings.

The Band and Strings Program is one of the exceptional features of the North Vancouver School District made possible through the tremendous efforts of our teachers, our parents, and our partner groups.  ‘Instrumental’ in providing leadership to this event has been teacher Lasse Leslie who organized over 1,000 student participants with the strong support of our District’s Band & Strings teachers.  Thank you for making this event a great success!

Education Week – highlighting student success!

As we celebrate Education Week across the School District this week, it is a perfect time to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of our students.  A number of Provincial Championships took place over the course of last week and once again our students and schools achieved outstanding results.

Windsor Gymnastics Team – Provincial Champions

Windsor Secondary are the proud Provincial Gymnastics Champions for BC School Sports.  While Windsor took first place in each of the Boys, Girls and the combined Boys and Girls categories, Argyle’s team placed 5th and Seycove’s Gymnastics Team placed 9th among the 45 competing schools.

Seycove’s Bantam (Grade 8) Girls basketball team, coached by Geoff Russell, advanced to the final, placing second in the Provincial tournament.  At the same event, the Windsor Girls placed 5th and were also recognized as the most sportsmanlike team.  Seycove’s Junior Team placed 12th at their Provincial Tournament, and Sutherland’s Juvenile team placed 13th.

In Girls wrestling, the Carson Graham girls team, coached by Ian McDonald and Tom Larisch, placing third in team standings.  while achieving many outstanding individual results. Cholena Hrone, of Carson Graham, was voted the Outstanding Female Wrestler.

Our students continue to contribute to the excellent reputation of North Vancouver School District being the Home of Champions.  This level of achievement is simply not possible without the incredible dedication and support of our coaches and our parents!  I look forward to reporting similar achievements from our students throughout Education Week

Arnold attended the print release which drew a crowd of close to 100 people and was available to sign copies of his book, Alpine Anatomy the Mountain Art of Arnold Shives.

Carson Graham Blessing Ceremony

I was deeply honoured to serve as a witness to the Blessing Ceremony held at Carson Graham Secondary on Monday, January 28.  The entire school population assembled for the blessing and demonstrated great respect and attention throughout this special event.

Elder Audrey Rivers provided a prayer and blessing to the community, bringing good wishes for the students, staff and community.  Alroy Baker brought greetings on behalf of the Squamish Nation and provided an explanation of the protocols associated with the ceremony.  This included: the singing of special songs, handed down from generation to generation; the importance of dance, and the significance of wrapping the carvers in blankets.

Carvers Ray Natraoro and Victor Harry worked with Carson students over the preceding months to prepare the Eagle carving that was unveiled and blessed.  The Eagle will be mounted in a prominent location for everyone to see.

A special thanks goes to Brad Baker, Deborah Jacobs, Tracy Williams, and Alroy Baker for their leadership in working together as a School District and as the Squamish Nation Education department to coordinate this very successful event.  The support of the Carson Graham staff and students and the active involvement and participation of our students of aboriginal ancestry was also greatly appreciated by all.
