People and the Environment (First blog of Humanities 9!)

Introduction:

Hello everyone, welcome to the first Humanities 9 blog. To start off, I would like to say this project was very challenging and very interesting; and possibly one of my favourite projects in PLP so far. So lets jump right into it. Every project starts off with a driving question, our driving question for this project was: ‘How do people and the environment affect each other?’ Now if you want to know how PLP works, then I suggest checking out one of my Scimatics blogs. I always make sure to include how the program functions. Now we have a new, and longer time table this year, therefore the Milestones have changed a little bit. We used to have around 6 milestones, now we only have 3, but they are much harder to solve.

Our Project:

Our project was about People and the Environment. We needed to pick a topic, that had to do with some sort of environmental issue that is affecting our world. We would get extra points if our topic was local. I chose Deforestation and old growth logging on Vancouver Island. After we picked a topic we needed to write a letter to a person from the government. I chose to write to Ms. Honourable Katrin Conroy who is the minister of forests, lands, and rule development. A picture of my letter can be found below. We also had a number of common lit activities to do along the way. These activities included, reading books, answering multiple choice questions, and practicing using evidence in paragraphs.

Milestones:

Milestone 1: Milestone 1, we needed to do our Letter plan conferences. What is this? Well, we had to make a detailed plan of how we plan to structure our letters, not only that we need to also include links to all the evidence we plan to include in our letter. I made sure to include a first copy of my letter as long as many links to different sites that include loads of evidence. Here is a picture of my Letter Plan sheet:

Milestone 2: This Milestone was a mix of different common lit activity’s we needed to do, as stated above, common lit is a mix of reading, then answering multiple choice questions and practicing using evidence in paragraphs.

Milestone 3: Our final Milestone was named, common lit connections. This was my least favourite Milestone because we needed to connect our final letter, to one of the common lit activities we needed to do. All the common lit activity’s made you read an entire book about an environmental issue, I chose Hey Come On Out. Then we needed to connect that story to our letter and show how they share the same idea of abusing nature. Here is a picture of my common lit connection:

Competency’s:
I’m my option I did an accomplished job at the competencies, for example, when writing my letter, I made sure to use strategies to analyze text, and recognized the role of context and perspectives in my letter, I also recognized how texts use literary to enhance meaning. I also made sure when writing, I made sure to revise and edit my letter to consider purpose and audience.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, this was my favourite humanities project in PLP. It was perfect for me, because I love to discuss important topics with people, and now that I’m in PLP 9 I feel more welcome; more settled. I feel I’m really starting to get the vibe for seycove, therefore I feel more confident when writing, this is a huge Milestone for me, because I have a reputation for looking down on myself. Now enough about me, lets see my answer to the driving question: How do people and the environment affect each other? Well, Humans impact the physical environment in many ways: overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation. These negative impacts can affect human behaviour and can prompt mass migrations or battles over clean water. An example is how deforestation is one of the leading causes of animal extinction. On my own time, I made a short YouTube video edit, and documented my environment that I have in my backyard and how my environment has shirked:

And here was my first draft of my letter:

Thank you again for tuning in (If you read this far) and I can’t wait to show you what’s next for PLP 9, see you again soon.
