Destination Imagination 2018- Adventure Awaits
“Get In The Boat”
In the year 2018, the PLP students arrived back at school after winter break.
They were greeted with the information about Destination Imagination.
And as the years before, we jumped on the boat and zoomed into creation.
DI is a competition for the creative. Challenges, stories, ideas and group work.
The Challenges–
There are a few challenges;
MY Challenge–
Last year for DI, I participated in the Engineering Challenge.
This year, I have been working alongside Jessie, Melanie, Maggie, Lauren and Alivia on the Fine Arts Challenge.
We are The Constellations.
Last year was a bit of a disaster. This year was a small step up from that.
The Fine Arts challenge this year was a musical.
We had to create a two act musical that included a spectacle, a set change, musical lyrics that
enhanced the story telling and two team choice elements that showed interests of the members of our team.
About The Team–
About 1/2 to 3/4 of our team is a dancer or had danced in the past. It was pretty useful when it comes to creating a musical to have people who knows the ways of the dance.
We have 6 people in our team and everyone is included in some kind of musical activity. Weather it’s band, choir or dance, we were all able to help with lyrics, dance moves or music.
For a DI group, we were surprised how well we worked together and how easy we had it. If there were any issues, we figured them out in an understanding, easygoing area. We worked through problems together, and although everyone had to give up an idea here and there, we all figured out what we thought as a group would work best for our team.
The Challenge–
On Saturday March 3rd 2018, the PLP classes of SEHcove Secondary woke up early and headed to school for 8:00am. ON A SATURDAY.
Each team met up in the assigned challenge room and awaited the time they would present.
For my team, we presented at 9:40(am). While this was an early performance, we were all kind of glad it was in the morning I think. We were easily able to get out there and give it our best morning energy.
SIDE NOTE— Due to DI sleep schedules, “morning energy” was adrenaline. And that’s pretty much it.
Now if you remember last year, my groups structures broke right before we had to present. That kinda sucked… but oh well. We improvised the whole thing after that, but it was okay for an epic fail.
As it’s said, nothing ever goes 100% planned when it comes to DI.
We did pretty well, we got out there, presented, and did pretty well in our opinions.
Midway through our presentation, our set broke.
Our set was designed so that we could roll a cave up and down to fit the story. We used a drill to do this.
During the second time we used the drill to roll up the cave, it broke. The drill came off and wouldn’t go back on. We still needed that for later in the presentation… IMPROV.
Our Presentation–
As the people who worked so hard on our set, story, script, songs, props and plans, we were pretty proud of ourselves. Yes, it could have gone better. Yes, we could have done things differently, but we didn’t know what we needed to change until we did it. And now we do.
I think we did really well as a group. We didn’t hate on each other for mistakes after, and we just went through the rest of the day reasonably okay.
Instant Challenge–
We aren’t allowed to talk about our instant challenges, what they were or anything, until after Globals.
However I can say that I think our team did pretty well. We all worked together and none of us killed the other.
What We Are Changing/What We Would Have Done Differently–
Right away I would say that something we are changing is our set.
We quite obviously failed at that, as it broke not even halfway through the performance.
Another thing we would have done differently is our separation between act 1 and 2.
We plan on improving bth of these things.
We have redesigned and will rebuild our set, and we are planing a new change of acts plan. Even of it is just remembering to do it.
We have quite a bit of work to do, as our raw scores didn’t come back as we would have liked and we are ready to make some changes.
We have lots of work to do before provincials. We can do it though, I believe in my team.
We can do this.
Thanks for reading about our frost DI experience of the year.
Thank you and have a nice day!
