Dear Sky, Shut Up.
“shUT UP SKY WE’RE TRYING TO FILM”
In our most recent unit, we have been recreating videos.
We have created two videos so far, where we have been assigned or found a video that we are to recreate to as much detail as possible.
As close as possible being;
-Finding a setting as close to the original setting as possible
-Costumes as near to the costumes worn by the original characters as possible
-Getting lines right!
The planning for these films are different from the ones we have done before, because we aren’t the ones who wrote the storylines and scripts and planned out the video.
We (of course) still did the storyboard, but the storyboard wasn’t based on our own work this time.
VIDEO ONE:
[CATCH]
The first Video we participated in recreated was called “Catch”. It was a horror/comedy bout two guys playing catch, one of them is playing REALLY badly and tires out the other guy to the point where he almost dies.
Bit dramatic, but still pretty funny.
This is our recreation video:
To plan for filming we had to do some “paper work” just not on paper. It was Video Prep.
VIDEO PREP:
For video prep, we had to do some planning. This planning included the following steps-
FILMING [1]:
For our first video, the filming went a bit differently then planned, as we had some miscommunication and a bit of timing failure. It all worked out though.
My group and I (Kai, Alivia, and I) collaborated with another group (Lucas, Kailey, and Adlih) to film this one, as we could use each others group members for actors. This was okay, but it took a lot of planning and we decided for our next video, we wanted it to be more our own plans and our own actors.
The videos themselves were almost ideantical in the end and that makes it hard to take credit for the work we were doing ourselves because it wasn’t clear who’s shots were who’s.
The next time, we definitely made our own video and used no actors from other groups.
VIDEO TWO:
[Do You Speak English?]
For this part of the project we changed it up even a bit more. For our last video (Catch), the Video was assigned to us by a teacher. For this part of the project, we had to FIND a funny video and get it approved to recreate. However it is very difficult to find a 1-3 minute funny video that is easy to recreate and is funny. It took a while, but after many attempts, we finally found a skit we could recreate.
The video took the same Video Prep as our last video and we were ready to film!
FILMING [2]:
For this filming, we had a bit of a problem as well. The video features one woman and two men, however our group did not fit those roles. We could have used Alivia as “man 2” but Kai found a second actor instead.
After finding a time to film on a weekend, we were ready to get the filming done, HOWEVER, the other actor after we had, said he couldn’t film on the day and we had to find someone else. We ended up casting Kai’s dad to play Man 2, and he did a really good job.
One thing about the video (other then the actors apparently) that we couldn’t rely on was the weather. The video we recreated was clearly based in summer, on a nice sunny day. However on our day of planning, not only was it filmed in Autumn, but there was a thunder storm. A THUNDERSTORM. It rained on us, and it was cold and we had to try to film in between claps of thunder. A challenge for sure, but not impossible.
The original video was taken in one shot, so we had to do it in one shot. Originally we were going to see if we could get away with sneakily doing it in maybe 2 or 3 shots, but by the end of filming, we had the whole thing down anyways and got it right.
CONCLUSION:
Recreation is quite a long process and attention to detail is very important. This part of our unit was very enlightening to what it takes to pay attention to detail. In our first video we didn’t realize how much work we had to put into it, but by the second one, we were full-speed-ahead searching to get as much detail in there as possible.
