Welcome back to your favourite blog!
To tie up our Scimathics year, we ended with a huge project on light and it’s elements. Basically, we could display this in any way we’d like, but it had to follow certain script requirements. I chose to showcase the elements of light in a glass mosaic. Originally, my idea was to create a stained glass piece, but unfortunately it didn’t work out and all the glass broke — resulting in the mosaic idea.
To represent the raven and his story, I made the raven the main focus of the mosaic. I painted it and then pasted mirrors on top of it so showcase reflection of light. The light in the mirrors bounces off of the surface, causing a reflection. I showed how he brought the light by choosing the black and yellow background pattern. The opaque black glass represented how the world was dark, and the yellow transparent glass represented the world after the raven brought the light. The black opaque absorbed the light, while the transparent glass allowed the light to pass straight through. To showcase symmetry, I placed the two “Suns” symmetrically on the glass. I made sure they were lined up perfectly, and also placed striped glass on them. The stripes represented how light travels in straight lines, also known as Ibn Al Hatham’s theory. My colour was represented all through the piece, with the red and yellow glass. This glass sent the light straight through, and reflected it back, resulting in the colour. I used my prism as the Ravens eye. The prism bounces the light back out in many lines. Lastly, I used metal weights cut as cylinders to stand the piece up. These cylinders are shapes and take up lights space.
The process of creating this project was complicated and long, it took me many hours to plan, place and paste on all the glass. Overall I am very proud and happy with the result. I’m especially happy with how I persevered when my original project idea failed, and how I quickly bounced onto a new idea.
