Monster Mashing

In SciMathics we’ve been getting crafty in math and studying volume and surface area. Of course, because this is PLP, our unit hasn’t been typical worksheets of constant equations, we’ve made a project out of it. This is our Monster Making project, so beware as you read on, because it’s about to get spooky.

I’m kidding, the only scary part of this unit was that I scared myself by actually getting answers right on the tests. Other than that, it was all good.

We started off by learning the formulas for volume and surface area for different shapes : cuboids, cylinders, spheres, etc. We then powered through a bunch of “Monster Making” worksheets .

If these answers are wrong I’m sorry I’ve failed

Once that was over, it was time to make our monsters. I used an old candle jar, baby lips containers, a pandora box, and pom poms to make it. I added glasses too so it had a little personality!

I then had to measure the shapes and calculate their surface area and volume. It came out to be 702.85 cm3 and 313.69 cm2.

Making the monster was fun but it was kinda annoying to have to put in a lot of different shapes because everything I found to use for it was a cylinder. Other than that it was really easy and simple, and it was fun to integrate a crafty project into math.

Until next time,

Tatum.
