Destination Imagination

Oh, Destination Imagination… Where do I even start?

When my teachers introduced my class to this idea, I don’t think anyone was super excited. We ran through some mini challenges to get started, and then they told us about the main group challenges. And the tournaments.

I’m pretty sure you can tell by now that I’m not (and wasn’t) very excited about this idea. Yeah yeah, deep down I knew it was positive and would help with my mindset about working in groups, but I’d never admit that. (Well I kinda just did… Oops!)

A few classes passed before we began planning for Regionals. My group wasn’t so sure or confident in ourselves at this time. We read through the main challenge we had to conquer, and the gazillion rules within it.

  • Nobody is allowed to give your group advice except for members in your group
  • You have a budget of 150 American dollars
  • You only have 8 minutes on stage
  • You must include 2 team choice elements
  • You must include a TechiClue
  • You must include 3 suspect characters

My, oh my. I’m stressed just writing that list and D.I is already over! Well, for my group at least, but we’ll get to that at the end.

Throughout many work filled weeks, my team argued, wrote scripts, planned costumes, memorized lines, made Team Choice Elements, participated in Instant Challenges, I could go on and on.

We had many difficulties throughout our projects timeline. Distraction was a big one. So was arguing over ideas. Thankfully, in the end we pulled it together.

Now, to explain Regionals! Even though we practiced over and over, my group wasn’t uber confident in ourselves. Luckily, after we killed our Instant Challenge, we were a bit more excited. In the actual challenge though, all was smooth until I forgot to grab the envelope that held the name of the guilty suspect. (Yikes.)

Overall, Destination Imagination was decent. I didn’t like it very much, but at least my team did okay. We won first overall in Instant Challenge, and fourth in our main challenge. Seycove did great, with awards in almost every category. We all qualified for Provincials, but my team agreed we don’t want to participate.
Until next year, D.I!!
