Sports have always played a large place in my life.
From figure skating to gymnastics, hockey to soccer, volleyball to basketball — you name it, I’ve played it.
I really love sports because of the team environment it immerses me in. My dad always pushed me as a kid to compete with a team so I could experience the feeling of success and failure. Being apart of a team is so important to me wether it’s on the field, ice, court or even life in general.
Beginning my sports career at two years old, I was a cute little ballerina! I continued dance on and off throughout my life, and I generally enjoyed it. From hip-hop to jazz to ballet, I did it all and it was so fun. I then moved onto figure skating, gymnastics and hockey. My family was all into hockey so it was no surprise when I got my first pair of hockey skates. Even though I was horrible, I was a little girl and I recall scoring once in my last season! But really, I was not a hockey player at heart. Continuing gymnastics, beginning volleyball and field hockey, I was always in sports!
Finally, in the fourth grade, I joined soccer. After a year not enjoying it much, I volunteered to step in for my injured goalie one game. I was absolutely terrified, it was raining and we were playing on gravel, but I loved every second of it! After being inspired to continue after making my first save — the ball bounced off my knee — I always wanted to play in net. Now, continuing my career as a goalie playing high league, I hope to continue, even when I move away from my home and soccer club.
Becoming a goalkeeper was one of my best decisions not only because I seemed to be pretty okay at it, but also because it taught me so much on and off the field. It taught me to persevere, stay determined and be more confident.
Sport has not only taught me the importance of being competitive, but also how to be a team player, a leader and not afraid of a challenge.
