Eliminate bulk section plastic bags

Welcome back! In this post I will talk about our end of year Blue Sky exhibition.

For this years exhibition I asked the question, “How might we create a product/system that would eliminate bulk section plastic bags from grocery stores?” This is the problem that I tackled during this years blue sky exhibition.

For this years blue sky post we followed the Launch Cycle.

“The launch cycle is a design thinking framework for getting the most out of the creative process. It is used in the arts, in engineering, in the corporate world, and in social and civic spaces. You can use it in every subject with every age group. It works when creating digital content or when building things with duct tape and cardboard.”

The LAUNCH Cycle: A K-12 Design Thinking Framework

We started the launch cycle off with the first stage.

During this looking, listening and learning phase of the launch cycle I grew a sense of awareness towards different problems that I could potentially solve.

Then second phase is the “A” stage, which is where we had to ask tons of questions.

This stage gave me a change to wonder about my idea, find out about the topic I chose for my project and learn a little more about the problem I was tackling.

Next we moved forward to the U stage where I started to understand my problem a bit better and created a solid foundation to start on.

From here we moved forward to the navigating of ideas, the “N” stage. This is where I started to make sense of the ideas I had and started putting things together. I figured out where I was taking my idea with this project and what I would create to portray my work.

Moving on to the “C” stage where I created my first prototypes. Images below:

After creating multiple prototypes of various things I followed the last stage of the launch cycle, the “Highlight and fix” phase. I changed any parts that weren’t working and created better drafts of my project. From here I moved back and forth from the “C” and “H” stage so that I was sure the work I produced in the end was my best work possible.

The night of Blue Sky:

My group for the exhibition day was called “Products World.” We decided to make our area theme a PLP trade show, so we had everyone dress in formal wear and bring food, lanyards, tablecloths and set everything to look like a trade show for our business.

My blue sky project this year is a perfect example of some of the high quality work that I’ve produced this year after learning from my previous mistakes. During this years blue sky project I was able to plan out my time to work on each project milestone and complete each stage of the process with confidence in the work I was creating.
