🌲What fraction of your time is screen time?🌲
Hello and welcome back to the forest of learning. In this project “Fractions Of Your Time” we will be tracking and recording how much of our week is spent on screens. This project was very interesting, now I can show you my process!
as always, we followed the project path throughout or project;
Through the project, we worked on our Curricular Competencies:
applying and innovating; I used this skill by using my class time efficiently, as well as made a lot of progress on my work in my table group. We helped each other mark our work, as well as helping out one another if we were confused or found something difficult. This shows good teamwork and care
understanding and solving; I showed this competency by making my screen time chart. I was experimenting with different forms of visualization to express the math skills we learned. Once I understood the concept of fractions, I learned to express them via pie charts.
communicating and representing; Just like understanding and solving, I used this competency in my screen time chart. I learned to show data in different ways, through pie charts, decimals, percents, and fractions.
To start off this project, we sharpened up our fraction skills. We worked on several different textbook pages throughout the entire project. We practiced adding and subtracting fractions, as well as just a general reminder of visualizing fractions, converting fractions, and identifying different types of fractions. We also learned to communicate and represent fractions via a pie chart.
Once we sharpened up our fraction skills, it was now time to start making our actual project! We were instructed to collect data through the week of how many hours we spent on screens, making pie charts to show some data, as well as one extra feature we wanted to record, I chose sleep. Through the week I set an alarm on my iPad for 6:30 AM, at 6:30 I would check my screen time feature in settings, then record how much of my screen time was productivity, entertainment, or communication of previous day.
Here is what my chart looked like for the first two days:
After the week of collecting data was over, we also presented our charts to the class. Then I was done! Here is how it turned out.
Overall , this short project was very interesting, I now know I spend a total of 29.28/168 hours per week! I improved my fraction skills, as well as expressed different ways to show data of how much the screen took up my week. I definitely want to improve on the amount of screen time I use through the week, but I am very proud of myself nonetheless. I think this project is something people should try on their own! since screens have become a big part of our lives, it would be interesting to see how much screen time you use in a week.
As always, thank you for watching me grow in the forest of
🌲learning🌲
