colonizing in a tempest is the last humanities unit that we will do for PLP eight. This is a very interesting unit and it is very cool. This is the driving question. How can we use Shakespeares “The Tempest” and the history of New France to stage dramatic tableaus that help an audience understand the lasting effects of colonization? Let’s get into the blog post. And if you don’t know what the tempest is here is the script. It is a long one so I will have a link here.
At the start of the unit we got to check out the milestones. Then after that we did anthropologist activities and we learned how to be an anthropologist. These were very interesting and really got us thinking about what it would be like meeting a new culture. These were very fun and the one that stood out to me was the snaidanacs. This was a representation of Canadians but with a weird point of view. This activity was one of the ones that really got me thinking. We then did some more exercises like the greatest citizen of New France. The one I researched was a commander of the french army and had a military history back in France. We also did a skit on life in New France. This was very fun and it had back drops and everything.
then we started on the mood boards. This was the first step into the actual play. These mood boards were meant to give the audience an idea of the feel of the act that they were based of. Our group was given act 4. We made ours happy then at the end it got dark and suspicious. After the mood boards we were assigned the mini plays. These were just a video of your little two to three person group going a scene. Here is our scene.
Then we got into the scripts and the start of the real play. We had to make a narration for the narrators and that was probably the most work. We had to make it go with the scene storyline from the tempest but incorporate it into New France, our group was grace, Rhiann and I. We decided on having two rich fur traders and two poor fur traders. Then when the rich men go to sleep the poor people go to kill the rich men for the furs and connections with the First Nations. Then we had to do the backdrop. We decided on having half a inside of a cabin and half outside in the fort. There it is.
We then got approved for all of the things and went into the actual play for everyone. We had to get costumes for the play. A couple were brought in but then we got to go to the theatre costume department and got to look at all the costumes. I was Alonso and Gonzalo. Alonso got to wear a red long coat that a duke would wear. And then Gonzalo the rich fur trader got to wear a nice fur coat that looked like it was old fashioned. The play went along with no flubbed lines or anything. It truly went well because we had so many rehearsals. Then after the play we got to do this blog post.
That is my post on the colonizing in tempest unit. Have a great day.
