Which German booby trap was most successful in World War II?
The incredibly resourceful Germans had multiple ingenious inventions to trick their enemies such as, exploding helmets, rifles, even chocolate bars, they could take any ordinary object and turn it into a bomb. Now imagine you are an allied soldier fighting on a battlefield during World War II, you see a discarded Nazi helmet and you want to take out your anger by kicking it, well don’t because IT’S A BOMB! That rifle perched up right against the wall, it’s a bomb, the newly refurbished door to a broken down house, also a bomb, the window next to it, you guessed it, a bomb. Now it is getting dark outside and you want to turn on the Night lamp, well lord knows do not turn it on BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS A BOMB!
Nazi spies turned everything into bombs and my personal favourite is the exploding chocolate bar, that’s right explosive candy. The idea of this exploding bar was when someone brakes of a chunk of chocolate a canvas is pulled out the bar triggering a bomb which would exploded in seven seconds. This chocolate bar was designed for Winston Churchill and specifically his sweet tooth.
The next creative bomb design is the exploding coal chunk or better known as the coal torpedo. The coal torpedo was a hollow iron casting that was filled to the brim with explosives the covered in coal dust. These bombs were intended for destroying American steam powered transportation. When the explosive coal piece was shovelled into the firebox or stream engine, the coal would reach a certain temperature then would exploded.
The next and most deadly booby trap that the Germans created was the exploding helmet. Walking around the battlefield you would see thousands of helmets laying on the ground, you go to kick one, BOOM, you just triggered a landmine. The Germans were ingenious with this invention, the design for this booby trap was a land mine is planted and then a helmet is placed on top which triggers the land mind. As soon as the helmet is moved slightly or taken of the mine an explosion erupts.
To answer my question, the most successful booby trap the Germans created throughout World War II was the exploding helmet. The simple and Intuitive design was effectively used turning into a deadly booby trap. Being able to disguise an everyday war object that soldiers expect nothing but safety from it, is actually a destructive explosive. Thousands of allied soldiers were harmed or died from this booby trap
