Destination imagination

Destination Imagination is a very special organization that strives to help skids show their creativity and skills. Every year in PLP we compete in the competitions that take place in our province. This year we were lucky enough to have the first tournament at our own school, Seycove. This year’s tournament was slightly different though as we started preparing our projects much earlier in the school year which helped us a lot with preparation.

We knew that DI would come around again this year but it was a surprise when we started. This was in part to do with our California trip that we would have in February, it also was to make sure we had a complete plan of what we had to before we went onto winter break. This worked for the most part. We managed to get most of a plan formulated before winter break but there was still a lot of things that we had to do.

Winter break came and went, and it was the usual rush to get everything organized and completed before the tournament date. The part that was different this time was how much more organized we were then we would have been if we didn’t start earlier. My group was Alex, Simon, Reid and Aiden and we were tasked with the Scientific challenge.

The aim of the scientific challenge was to create a ride using three different scientific concepts. It would also have to operate and work in a very uncommon location. Our approach to this was making the ride in a volcano that would help decrease the population of lava fish. I know it seems very far fetched and unrealistic but this is what the appraisers were looking for.

So for every class we bounced around ideas for the story and how we would represent these ideas in our presentation. We made the ride, back drop and the script all right after winter break so we we would have them ready for the presentation. There were many different parts of the presentation that we had to get together as well. Things like the backdrop, team choice elements and scripts that had to be memorized were all things that were vital to what we had to do.

Our presentation at the tournament went very well and we managed to get 1st place in our main challenge. The part of our presentation that the appraisers enjoyed the most was how well our ride worked and looked during our presentation. We got close to maximum points on that part of the challenge and now it is time to focus on the parts of the challenge that we did not do so well on. This was mostly the team choice elements and once we get those down then we think that we will be a much stronger team.
