The BC tech summit is something that thousands of people go to each year. It is the largest technology event that takes place in western Canada. Our class got to go on a very interesting field trip to BC tech summit. We had no idea what to expect from this but once our teacher told us that tickets cost about a thousand dollars we were immediately interested to see what it would be like. There were a couple of assignments that we had to accomplish while we were there like interviewing a mentor a looking at different parts of the post secondary recruitment section.
While we were there we had to listen to a few different speakers and different they had to say about the tech industry and their companies. One of the speakers that I chose to listen was Brent Bushnell, the creator of the two bit circus. Bushnell is a very famous entrepreneur and is an extremely interesting person. His idea for the two bit circus was to make something that was very different from a normal amusement park. Instead of having normal rides he has a dunk tank filled with fire and a cloud that rains vodka. The message he wanted to spread to us was to be as successful as we can be following our passions and the things we love. He was one of the most interesting people I have ever heard speak and one thing that really stood out to me was a quote that we said that I found really intriguing.
Another speaker that I found very interesting was the founder of plastic bank called David Katz. The idea that made him a famous entrepreneur was plastic bank. This is way to greatly reduce the amount of plastic garbage going into the ocean. The base of this idea is that people in poor countries who throw garbage into the ocean collect the garbage and give it to plastic bank to sell to large companies. In turn the poor people get money or supplies they need in the ire everyday lives. The part that I found most interesting about his presentation was how realistic he was being. He said that trying to clean up the ocean is something will most likely never happen, but if we can reduce the amount of garbage going into the ocean it would be much easier. Both of these speakers were people that have made huge impacts in the tech community and around the world. The presentations had impacts on a lot of people and I think that if everyone tries to follow their advice it would be amazing.
Another huge part of the tech summit were the booths that were there for post secondary programs in Canada. There were many different booths in this section but one that stood out to me was a project that students at SFU had created to help sonographers their own health problems that come from work. They had created a robotic contraption that could do their work for them. They could control it from a lever and do all the same work. This would greatly help the efficiency of the sonography as well. It was very interesting to see how these students had recognized a problem and then came up with a very interesting solution to fix the issue, this reminds me a lot of the blue key projects we do in PLP.
Finally we had to create a video that showed our interview with a mentor that was at the tech summit. This was something that helped us really understand what it is like for young entrepreneurs in bc. Talking to these people and asking them questions that we actually wanted to know helped us really understand a lot more about the tech industry. They had some great advice for us and we loved talking to them. The tech industry is something that is very prominent in BC at the moment and getting the opportunity to leave more about is really good. After seeing all the things at the tech summit I would really consider trying to learn about it in post secondary would be a lot of fun.
