The driving question for this project was “how are correlation and causation different?” And this whole beginning of this project was learning about what the difference is between those two things so I’ll explain it here. For causation A causes the outcome of B but with correlation A and B is just a plain relationship. For example, you do a poll with the people in your class for who likes candy and who has used glue in their life, and when you put the results into a scatter plot it looks like this.(insert photo of correlation scatter plot here). Â
It doesn’t mean that it is causation it is probably just a correlation unless it makes sense that it would be a causation. For example, if the poll was about if you had a screen time average of over 5 hours a day and if you stay inside most days.
In this project we had a lot of milestones, and in this part of my blog posts I like to talk about my favourite ones. First of all milestone 2, I really enjoyed this one because it involved asking everyone in the class some questions then seeing if there is a correlation or causation. The two things we wanted to correlate were if you were taller you had larger hands, and it was causation. (insert PDF link here)
The second one I enjoyed doing was milestone 3. I liked this one because it was just making the plan for our survey questions, the kind of sample we are using and if we think it will be correlation or causation. Also go check out the blog post about this same project from my partners point of view www.blog44.ca/inesm. Also if you were wondering what the questions we used were check out this link here that goes to my milestone 3. (insert PDF link here)
The next one I really enjoyed was milestone 4, I like it because we did it once we got all our answers for our survey and it was just fun seeing if we got a correlation or causation. (insert PDF link here)
Then of course my favourite one, milestone 6/the presentation. This one was fun because we presented to our class in keynote form our results and what we learned. (insert PDF link here)
Now time for the curricular competencies.Â
To conclude this blog post, I would like to say that learning about the difference between correlation and causation and knowing how to use scatter plots may not help me in every area of life, but it sure is a cool thing to know how to use.Â
