What do you do with a sick chemist? If you can’t helium, and you can’t curium, then you might as well barium.

If you couldn’t tell by the joke, this past project was about chemistry. We had to make an animation to shows ionic and covalent bonding. This project really reminded me of last years project where we made a comic book about chemistry as well. But anyways the driving question for this project was “how do the electron arrangements of atoms determine the chemical and physical properties of elements and compounds?”. It determines the chemical and physical properties because. If an element had more electrons than it needs than it isn’t super bad. But if an element doesn’t have enough than it is desperately looking for some. Every element wants to have a full valence shell. So thats when ionic and covalent bonding come in.

Ionic bonding occurs when one element element has more electrons than it needs so it gives one or two to another element that doesn’t have enough. So that way it can have a full valence shell. Covalent bonding occurs when one or both atoms don’t have enough electrons for a full valence shell. So they share electrons with each other and that way can both have a full valence shell.

Each scimatics project we do starts with a mind map, and this project was no exception.

Each scimatics project we also do a lot of workbook pages, this one was no exception ether.

Each scimatics project we read a lot of textbook pages, and this one was no exception.

Each scimatics project we do a project end mind map, this one was no exception.

There is a lot of repetition in scimatics.

One thing we did before starting the animation was make a story board. Still up to now I’m not completely satisfied with it even though I re did it 3 times. Everyone based theirs off of real Bohr models, but I wanted to be different. I made my whole animation built off of two metaphors. For ionic bonding I used a man asking another man for some money. For covalent bonding I used two people moving in with someone to split the rent. I eventually got an accomplished on this milestone.

But then I started animating. This took a LONGGG TIMEEE. A lot longer than I thought it would. But by the end, it was very good.

To conclude this blog post, I’ve been watching animations for a wile now but didn’t think it would take that long to make a 3 minute long one. Also I’m looking forward to the next project.
