Over the past two months we have been learning about the process of creating an advertisement. Our class partnered with Deep Cove business to interview and create ads for that business. I really learned how difficult it was to get your ad perfect. I felt like we really learned a lot.

Our group decided to work with bluhousecafe. (Yes, I know its spelt wrong. That’s how they spell it. I know. Weird.) We emailed the owner of bluhouse, and all things seemed to be going great…. until she emailed back. Once. We got a hold of her via bluhouse’s website and wrote an introduction email asking if they wanted to participate. They said yes but was to busy to meet with us in person so we were going to email back and forth and things were set.

We sent her some questions and didn’t get a response. We asked again if it would be easier to schedule a skype call or if emailing was fine. No reply. We asked if they still wanted to participate because we needed to know if we should find another company, to no avail.

We still had to make drafts so we tried our best to answer our questions with their website and their instagram which was fine but not great. Ally, Felix, Jude, and I worked hard but I really Think that this assignment would have been easier if we had had more information.

We had to make several drafts and honestly this was the worst one. It was my first draft and honestly if I did it again I wouldn’t have drawn it. Most people didn’t understand the idea and I got a little bit frustrated. The original idea was a smoothie that had the Deep Cove mountains in chia seeds because it was organic and local but it didn’t really translate.

My next draft was a bit better but not by much. I took a photo off their website and inserted in into their store front. It looked weird because I didn’t take enough time to do the editing. I would re-do the angle of the  storefront…. and the colors clash… and the photo wasn’t mine. Overall, kind of a mess.

 

My next draft was a heck of a lot better. (That’s not a hard bar to pass) The colours worked better together and this time, this photo was mine. The chia seeds definitely got lost and I should have just taken them out.  If you look close you can see the exposure on the hand is way brighter than the background because I added the hand in with SuperimposeX, which is great, but I am clearly not the person to advertise for it.

 

My last draft was much better than my first try. But if I could re-do the whole project, I would have gone with a different idea. I think I did my best but I still butchered the entire project. I put the address in and their slogan. I think it deserves about a 5 out of 10. Not fantastic…

 

Clearly, advertising is not my thing. I will continue to work hard and approach each challenge with optimism but at the same time, I’ve realized that my advertising game needs some work.

In my P.L.P. Class we worked extremely hard to get to our last draft. After we got there, we were extremely lucky to go to an advertising agency named Pound and Grain. I was expecting it to be grungy and old but I was super suprised how modern it was.

The people were super nice and offered some great advice. One example she pointed out was how people read ads linearly. That means we read left to right. It greatly improved my ad. I’m so great full for the opportunity to visit and learn from Pound and Grain.

Overall, I enjoyed this project but would have worked harder to get the photo at bluhouse. And taken out those nasty chia seeds.
