Hello, “Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.” This is my second ever mPOL. Also little later than the usual one at the end of the first semester but I will still be talking about my experiences from this year so far. I will start by sharing my Learning Plan.
Learning plan:
This is my updated and revised Learning Plan. I revisited this at the beginning of this school year. The whole point of a Learning Plan is to assess yourself. I wrote about my strengths, growth and supports in each competency. This also lets my teachers know where I can improve.
Core competencies:
The first competency I will be taking a look at is AGENCY. Agency is all about taking initiative for yourself and being self-sufficient. This also falls under the lines of taking responsibility of my own learning and actions. One of my strengths in this competency is that I am good at accepting feedback and peer critique to improve my work. I need to work on being completely ready with my iPad out, listening and paying full attention to the teacher right when the bell rings. Sometimes my iPad isn’t out or I am talking with friends and I am not ready to learn. Going forward I will try to pay better attention to the time so I can be ready.
The next competency is ENGAGEMENT. The keywords to this competency is Contributions, Enthusiasm, Helpfulness and Reflection. Overall I am quite good at these skills, especially helpfulness. For the most part I give helpful but constructive feedback while also creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Contributing in discussions with the class or group members is something need to work on. To work on this I want to set a goal. I will push myself to take part in one class discussion each day. I think this goal will help me gain confidence with speaking in front of more people.
CONDUCT, ETHICS, and INTEGRITY are the third competency’s. These competencies are about respecting others including teachers and peers, following the code of conduct and setting a good example for my classmates. When it comes to citizenship I am quite good at staying Positive while also encouraging and supporting my classmates. Something I can work on around this topic is focusing on the task at hand and fully paying attention while the teacher is talking. Sometimes I get distracted while talking with people sitting in my table group. Sometimes I even just space out and forget to listen. This is something I will work on and try my best to get better at.
Next, PREPARATION. When comes to preparation it is my job to come to class not only on time but prepared to learn and ready to participate in whatever is expected of me. I am also supposed to manage my time effectively and meet the required deadlines. For the most part I am good at coming to school on time and I am rarely late to a class. I need to work on paying attention to deadlines. To do that more often I will set reminders on my phone or iPad using the app “Things”. This will help me stay organized so I can hand my work in on time instead of forget and hand an assignment in late like I sometimes do.
The fifth competency is SELF-REGULATION. Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you. This is the competency I want to improve on the most. I am quite good at seeking help when needed. I am good at asking questions so that I can feel confident with what I am doing. Managing distractions and self-disciplining myself is where I have some room for improvement. I will practice this skill more going forward.
Finally, COMMUNICATION and COLLABORATION is the last competency I will talk about. From the most part I am quite good at providing constructive feedback to peers. I am also good at communicating with my teaches in advanced when I am going to be absent from a class. Something I need to work on is being more reliable while working with a group. For example, when my group and I am supposed to meat up before or after school I sometimes forget to. Again, I will start using reminders on my phone to notify me before hand so that I remember.
Science ( My favourite project ):
This is the class that I had the most fun in last term. The projects were interesting and I liked the way they where being taught but most importantly, they where enjoyable. My favourite project was called “Handle With Care”. This project was all about the Ocean ecosystem and specifically the kelp forests and the food web in our local ocean. My favourite part was going down to the beach on days when the weather was nice and taking water samples and looking under the microscope for bacteria or micro plastics. I find the ocean really interesting and fun to learn about. I would love to go deeper into this subject in the future.
Humanities( My least favourite project ):
In Humanities this year worked on some projects that I thought weren’t my best work. Although they where fun, I felt that I could have put more effort into them and worked harder at. One that comes to mind is “Rise Of The Frankenstuffies”. I mostly didn’t enjoy this project because I found the reading portion of it challenging and difficult. For me it was hard to comprehend and made the whole experience unenjoyable. I liked sewing the actual stuffy, but I found the video hard and frustrating at times. Looking back to it now, it actually really improved my editing and keynote skills.
Maker (Something I am proud of):
I really enjoyed this class last term. One of my favourite parts about PLP is that we get to make things, be creative and use our imagination. This year I think I demonstrated this skill well in Destination imagination (Di) when I recreated the famous Stary Night by Vincent Van Gogh by using acrylic paint. I am proud of the end result. Painting is something I was already familiar with before Di so I was exited to do this for school.
What does my work reveal about me as a learner:
When I look back to all of my favourite projects I have done this year, I notice a continuous pattern between them. I love using creative graphic ways to explain my learning including PowerPoints and Canva. I really enjoy putting my ideas into a presentation that looks visually appealing. This process helps me understand and organize the material better. I look forward to doing more projects using these skills in the coming years.
Thank you!
