Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”
Welcome to my tPOL, today I will be reflecting on my grade 9 school as a PLP student and share some of my strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. I will also be trying to convince you why I think that I am ready to head in to grade 10.
This year, the driving questions is: How can you showcase evidence to demonstrate that PLP success behaviours have prepared you to advance to the next grade?
Core competencies:
To begin I have filled out this chart about my success behaviours. I have chosen three of the core competencies that I will talk about and why/how it resonates with me.
The first competency is accepting feedback, which is a major part of AGENCY. I would say I am quite good at getting feedback from my classmates and teachers and even my parents. Sometimes I ask for people to go over my work to make sure it is meeting the proficient standards. When I’m not meeting proficient standards, my teachers will tell me to go back and revise my work in Showbie. Sometimes when my parents correct me, I get annoyed or frustrated but I try to listen and stay calm because I know they are just trying to help. For me, it is a lot easier for me to accept constructive criticism from my teachers or class mates. I am working on taking my time to change what needs to be revised in order to get the grade I am striving for. To me, agency is all about being able to do things on your own terms and making your own decisions without others telling you what to do which I demonstrate well in accepting feedback and overall this school year.
The next competency we will look at is CONDUCT and INTEGRITY specifically the category respect. To me, conduct and integrity is all about being honest, respecting others and your presence overall in the classroom. In class, I would say that I am constantly respecting the rights and opinions of others and generally a very respectful and polite person. I definitely need to work on staying on task, staying focused and making sure that I am not only just looking at the teacher, but actively listening when I am turned to the teacher and my eyes and ears are ready to learn to minimize getting distracted. I think I have been quite considerate and polite when it comes to this competency but there is always room for improvement.
The final competency I well focus on is ENGAGEMENT, specifically contributions. I chose to talk about this category over the others because this something I have been trying to work on. I have a hard time contributing to full class discussions and I don’t generally put up my hand in class if I don’t have to. I am not bad at contributing to conversations in smaller groups, I just don’t like speaking alone in front of a lot of people. This strongly relates to my fear of public speaking as well. I have set multiple goals, established targets and various techniques to improve my public speaking like see if I can put up my hand at least once per day. I have been working on this more in non PLP classes but definitely not every day. There is definitely lots of room for improvement and I will continue to work on this going forward. I think this is a good goal because it stretches me out of my comfort zone but it is also reachable and not to challenging.
What I could Improve on for next year:
I have improved a lot this year but I know I am still far from perfect and just wanted to touch on some things before I head into grade ten. I have noticed that I am quite good at making my work look visually appealing using fonts, layouts and media but I think I would benefit by exploring the subject matter deeper. This would help me so that I can be prepared and more knowledgeable instead of just touching the surface and just meeting the proficient standard. To do this, I could do more research before hand, look at more specific sources and taking the time to study and grasp a better understanding of the subject material. Another thing that I should work on is being more careful to review and go over my work before handing it in to make sure there are no spelling or grammar mistakes. This would benefit me so I don’t have to go back and revise it later.
What have I improved on as a learner this year and Why do I feel ready to head into grade ten:
Since the beginning of the year, I have been trying really hard to try and become the best learner I possibly can. I feel that I have really improved my writing skills from my past project called “Let’s Get Riel”. I have also gotten a lot better at editing various movies and videos using CapCut because of the project “In The Name Of Nationalism” in Humanities and “Thrill Us” in Maker. I have also gotten more comfortable with public speaking, time management, working as a team, and even understanding complex topics quicker. I have also definitely become a more confident person which I reveal in some of my work. On of my goals last year was to speak up more in projects working in a group, and I think I have definitely fulfilled that goal this past year. I will continue to grow and improve these skills and get even more confident with them moving forward into grade ten. For now I am proud of myself and what I have accomplished and achieved this past year and I am excited for what next year will bring.
Thank you!
