Ah, yes.
We finally reached that part of Personal Growth Plan. This course has been a very harsh reality check for me.
Budgeting. Career plans. Resumes. Job interviews.
Eugh. (Growing up sucks, time to move to Neverland and live out my forever childhood as a lost boy.)
✨How can I effectively market myself to employers?✨
We started this section of our PLP course through ideating different careers that we find desirable – both realistic and ideal. We then researched the education and qualifications we would need to in order to have these jobs.
Personally, I had no trouble finding a realistic opportunity for myself, but I have a lot of difficulty coming up with an ideal one. I don’t like to allow myself to think in ideals because I feel like that’s only setting myself up for disappointment. I prefer this pragmatic method of planning, instead of allowing myself to dream and fantasize about a reality that might not be realistic for myself.
We also used an application called MyBlueprint to help us plan and research the education we would need to qualify for our desired careers, as well as to take surveys that may provide insight in careers that might be suitable for us.
Then, we made some resumes! I had an advantage in this department, since I have experimented with making resumes in the past for fun. Because of such, I only had to edit an old resume of mine to include more recent and relevant information, as well as to apply new learning in order to revise and improve it. We were required to have a resume with and without a headshot. Personally, I’m not fond of at the prospect of having a headshot resume because I dislike the thought of being instantly rejected or discriminated against due to my race. Nonetheless, here are my resumes:
I also made a LOT of business cards for myself. I couldn’t decide on a final design, since I made so many that I liked – which wasn’t necessarily hard with the abundance of templates Canva has.
In conclusion, although I still don’t have a job (not that I have done any serious job searching lol), I believe I now know how to market myself effectively and efficiently for my Future™. I believe that having an updated and recent resume will serve me well when I finally do decide to go job searching, and although parts of this process overwhelmed or stressed me, I admit that this learning process was overall truly valuable.
See you next time!
