Hi blog, do you know the story of Cinderella? You probably do as itโs a story that has been re-told over and over again. Iโve been learning about the years after the Second World War in class, so what does Cinderella have to do with the 1950โs? During this time there were people with time and money to go to theatres like veterans settling down and starting families, so when Disneyโs Cinderella was released it was a huge success.ย
In the 1950โs people did have televisions but not everyone, newspapers were still the biggest form of communication or media. This meant it had a big influence on people at the time. Articles about the new animated film Cinderella advertised the movieโs main character as โthe ideal womanโ. It was a ridiculous claim as she was an animation, not even a real person but this could have lead to people believing that this is an accurate representation of what the average woman looks like or should look like.ย
The company behind Cinderella, Disney, continued to grow after the movie was released. With growing popularity, it was a very big deal when Disneyland opened in California. In the first years of it being open, world leaders visited to see a snapshot of what America is like.
This created a situation very similar to how newspapers advertised Cinderella. With people believing that Disneyland represented the United States and the way Americans think, Disneyland had gained a large amount of influence. The issue was, Disneyland didnโt represent what the United States were like. Just like Cinderella, it was an idealized version and not reality.ย
