DRIVING QUESTIONS

“How have I demonstrated growth as a learner so far this year?”

“How can I sharpen my Learning Plan to ensure I will reach my learning targets by the end of this school year?”

✨POL Declaration✨

“Thank you for coming to my presentation of learning. I am the expert on my own learning. I am also responsible and accountable for my own learning. You can expect me to give an honest evaluation of my progress. We will discuss my strengths and opportunities for growth. Thank you in advance for listening and for offering feedback that I can use to improve as a learner.”

Fails:

– Ambition

–  Communication

Growth:

– Overall Management Skills

– Confidence

There weren’t many PLP projects this term since most of my classes are next semester. However, I feel that I’ve learned so much about myself and my work habits  (in and out of PLP), and I have much to reflect on.

The first project I’ll be speaking about is “Gold Digger.”

✨Driving Question✨

”How Did the Discovery of Gold Shape our Province and its People?”

Instead of focusing on the “golden age” of the Gold Rush, my story takes place during the decline. I really wanted it to share the feeling of insignificance that many found when they moved to BC. The economy is moving on and miners are forced to look for different ways to survive.

I particularly struggled with writing authentic characters and dialogue. It’s really hard to write from different perspectives, especially if they’re historical. I wasn’t sure how my characters would’ve communicated or acted. Looking back, though I tried finding first hand accounts on the internet to no avail, I wish I’d tried harder to look for some (maybe at the library or someplace else?) I feel like the process would have gone smoother if I had.

Respectfully and accurately depicting the perspective of someone from another culture is hard, and it definitely didn’t help that my story takes place in the 1800s.

However, I believe my greatest struggle was getting past the fear of being misunderstood. I worried a lot about my story, and in a way, my worldview/perspective, not being relatable or communicated well. I was always second guessing myself when I shouldn’t have been and it really slowed my process.

I’m most proud of the small pieces of information I hid between words. Every action a character makes is influenced by the factors around them.

✨Driving Question✨

”How can we keep apologies for past wrongs alive so they are remembered – and not repeated – today?”

Our second project this semester was dedicated to the “Ology” of apology.  This project was about some less known matters in BC’s past and the hidden injustices committed by our country (and province)

We had to make an interactive keynote which would tell the story of the event through primary sources.

I felt like I really rushed this assignment. I wished I put more effort into my writing to show the thought I put into the analyzation of my sources.

– Managing my time

– Making sure my product fits the criteria

– “Getting things done”

I was especially intrigued by this assignment, since I’ve started getting into podcast-like things. I tried to speak clearly with a good intonation and an engaging voice. I’m very happy with the audio clips I snuck in, especially that famous line from the pearl harbour presidential speech.

Although I had to revise my background music (chill drumming it didn’t quite fit with historical injustices), I’m very proud of my audio clip.

Inspired by the little lantern in the greatest showman, we decided to create a light display that showed the theme and story of the Komogata Maru and the Japanese Internment. We also made it rotate and spin like a mobile.

We first created a prototype to see if the mechanisms of the lantern worked. Right away, we discovered that our phone lights were the only things capable of lighting our monument (though we tested other light sources to no avail.) This step was very helpful later on.

✨Driving Question✨

”How has William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet remained relevant to contemporary storytelling?”

I’d say my favourite (and the most difficult) project this semester was creating a filmed adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most infamous plays, “Romeo and Juliet.”

(I swear, Leonardo DiCaprio was drenched for a third of the movie)

As someone who loves movies, getting the opportunity to binge watch a ton of film for homework (in and out of class) was fantastic. Though by the end, I was very very sick of Romeo and Juliet’s story (there is only so much Shakespearean I can handle at a time), I feel like I learned a lot from this project.

One of the assignments for this project was to analyze the playwright…

Before I read the play, I watched the 1996 adaptation Romeo + Juliet. I found the “modern-ish” setting and the acting alongside the original lines very helpful in understanding the story. Even when I look back on the adaptation we made, I took a lot of inspiration from this movie (particularly in the introduction.)

Of course, I can’t forget to mention the final product of this project… our very own adaptation!

I learned a lot about moviemaking and directing through creating our short adaptation. We had a fairly short amount of time to make this film considering it was the final product, and it was hard to finish it in time. Most of this was due to me being very very ambitious, because I’d been anticipating this project for awhile.

In the end, it wasn’t quite what I had originally envisioned, but I was pretty happy with the final product. However, the process it took to create the film was very taxing and probably could have been managed better.

– Teamwork & Confidence

– Leadership

– Time Management

– Ambition & Acceptance

(I really improved my audio editing skills and I got to record some foley!)

“How have I demonstrated growth as a learner so far this year?”

“How can I sharpen my Learning Plan to ensure I will reach my learning targets by the end of this school year?”

This semester was tough at times and there’s been a lot of changes (like the lack of Scimatics and the introduction of PRE-CALCULUS). However, I’m very proud that I got through it while also managing to create some very cool things.

Most of all, I’ve demonstrated a lot of growth…

1. Managing a Grade 10 Timetable

2. Confidence

3. Prioritizing Sleep (That’s right, a full 9-10 hours every night. We’ve done it guys.)

I’M DEFINITELY READY FOR THE REST OF GRADE 10!
