Revolution: English Civil War

In class we have been learning about the English civil war. I was asked to choose something that interested me the most to do some further research on. My question is, why was government and religion so important to people in the 17th century that it started wars like the English civil war? After doing some further research on this and looking at many different websites, I found the answer I was looking for below.image

Unlike other civil wars in England, which mostly focused on who should rule rather than how the nation should be ruled, this war was more concerned with how the kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland were governed. Some people say that the English civil war was not just one war, but three.image

When King James came into power, he came into conflict with parliament. The cost of government was rising but the government’s income did not keep up. Rents from royal lands could only be raised when the lease ended. Parliament was therefore in a strong position. MPs could refuse to raise money for the king unless he bowed to their demands. So the king was forced to look for new ways to raise money.

Government and money were two key factors for having power. Every country wanted more power then the other and the only way to get this power was through government. That is why government was so important back in the 17th century. This lust for power and control over government, or even a new, better government, was what the main reason for the English civil war was.

Creation of the Periodic Table of Fruits

When I look at the periodic table of elements, I think of all the hard work, research, and knowledge that went into creating a table as complex and informational as that. I thought what it would be like to create my own table of elements, the process that I would have to go through to create such a thing. After creating my own table of fruits, I’ve realized the amount of time and effort that was put into creating something like that. Even though my table was not as complex.

My first step to creating this table imagewas finding 30 different types of fruits. I then went onto the next step of creating categories for them like the colour of the fruit, or the mass of the fruit. Lots of research was put into finding the information about each fruit. Next I had to figure a way for all of the fruits to fit together in a table. Each column is a different colour of fruit. For example the first column is red fruit, and the second column is orange fruit. Then in each column starting at the top then going down, the PH level (citrus level) goes down. The categories I used to sort out all the fruit were colour, mass, origin, and PH level.

TWIL: Marriage Scene

In the Elizabethan times to be married you had to have your parents consent. Although, in the Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet, neither of the two had their parents permission to be married. In the original play I believe that Shakespeare chose to leave the wedding scene out of the play because at the time the law was against what Romeo and Juliet were doing.

imageThe play has been re made several times into movies. As a director, they got to choose wether or not to include the marriage scene in the movie. In a more recent remake of the play directed by Baz Luhrmann, he decided to include the wedding scene in the movie. I think that in the way he showed the scene it helped the viewers to fully understand how a wedding form the time was presented. Although there was some loss from showing the scene.

By showing the wedding scene in the movie, I believe that there is some loss of the real play because the original play did not have the wedding scene in it because at the time being married without a parent’s permission was not right. In my opinion it would have been better to leave out the wedding scene because then it would be just like the original play.

imageIf I were to be the director of Romeo and Juliet, I would choose to leave out the wedding scene because you know that the two are getting married and you already know that it has to be a secret. In my opinion the scene just takes up space in the movies and isn’t necessary. I believe that the since the scene was not in the original play, then it should stay out of any remakes of it.

TWIL: Creating Poetry and Extended Metaphors

imageShe is like a single flame
There is no way for her to be tame
When people try to turn out the light
She will always be there to put up a fight
Obstacles come in her way
But they will never make her stay
She keeps moving on
Yet she will never be gone
The way she burns bright
It could light up anyone’s night

Creating and writing poems have always    been a struggle for me. What I find as the most challenging part is making sure that it flows all together nicely. Also I find it difficult to stick to the format of the type of poem that I have chosen to write.

For this particular poem I chose to compare my mom to a flame. When I think of my mom I think of a flame because she has a passion that burns so bright. She is also very strong and is hard to control, much like a fire. Much like a flame, many things are able to come across my mom as obstacles that need to be faced so that she can keep burning bright. She is what keeps me going, she is what helps me to see my path by lighting the way. Even if she is having a bad day, she still finds a way to make me or anyone smile.

The format of this poem I chose was a couplet. I chose to write five couplets that all fit together will. This took me quite some time to come up with an idea for each pair. The pattern for my poem is AABBCCDDEE. I chose this style of poem because I thought it would be a challenge to create rhyming pairs. This took me quite some time to find rhyming words that flowed nicely with the message I was trying to say. To help me come up with rhyming words I used this website.

SLC Introduction

Student Led Conferences (SLC) are a very interactive way to share my learning with others. My first step was to answer the leading questions that helped me organize my thoughts. This gave me an opportunity to reflect on my learning. The blog posts allowed me to have a foundation to write my script. It forced me to look back on the work that I have completed in the past term. They will also be useful during the SLC to guide me through my presentation.
I hope to improve my presentation skills through practice and review.

My portfolio consists of my blogs and pictures that help explain my overall learning and goals.

Goals

Goal setting is key to a great learning experience and outcome. For the second term I have many goals that I wish to accomplish. In humanities I thrive to be able to get every single piece of work done on time. This is not an easy goal and will take some effort to accomplish, but I believe that if I set my mind to it, then I can do it. Also planning ahead when exactly I have time to do my work will be a big help.

imageDuring my first term of science I did not do my best. I found some aspects of the subject confusing and I did not do anything to help myself. My goal for science for term two is to put the effort into talking to a peer, adult, or teacher to ask for some clarification and maybe a little help. Also I can try and make the extra time to go and get some help to make sure my work is at its top standard.

A personal goal of mine for term two is to be able to be calm and relaxed when there is a project that needs to be presented to a small group or class. This can be accomplished by be well prepared by practicing exactly what I am going to say so that I won’t get worried about mixing up my words or stuttering while I’m presenting. Also if I forget about the people who will be watching my presentation and just pretend it is just me alone, then it would be much easier to speak clearly and fluidly.

Science Reflection

imageThrough term one, science was not my strongest course, but I always knew that I needed to try my best. I feel like my best work was my genetic mutation project that we did at the beginning of the year. Before we started this project we did a unit all on genetic mutations and how they can effect and organism. Once we had learned about that, we then chose a genetic mutation of our choice to look more into and later on create a project all about this mutation. Before starting my project I first decided what format I wanted to choose for this project, I chose eximageplain everything. Then I researched facts as well as pictured to fit into my presentation. After that I put it all together in paragraphs and created my presentation.

I did have some troubles throughout the project. For example, I found it challenging to find pictures that fit in nicely with what I was talking about. It took a lot of my time to find picturyes for this particular topic. Also when doing a project I always find it challenging to start it because it takes some time for me to create an idea of what it can do. I found it quite easy to find and write down facts about my topic and I think that researching would be considered one of my strengths when it comes to science projects.

Quizzes have always been a weakness of mine. I find it difficult to try and remember all that we have learned in the last unit and then spit it all out in one hour. For me, I much prefer to show my learning with projects because I think that it showcases my learning better. I would definitely say that doing projects is one of my strengths when it comes to science. For the remainder of the year I have set a goal to be able to openly talk about what we have learned in the last unit without having a problem.

Humanities Reflection

image

One of the pieces of work that I am most proud of this year is my essay about Mt.Everest. This one piece of work is the one that I spent my most time and effort on working to make sure it was well written. I spent quite a fair amount of time planning out what points I could use in my essay as well as brainstorming supporting details to go with the points that I had chosen to use in my essay. Also I spent some time finding quotes from websites and Into Thin Air that supported and flowed with my topic for each paragraph. Finding and deciding which quotes were suitable to go in my essay was challenging. It took some time to find the right quotes that fit in nicely with the contents off my essay. I did two drafts of this essay to get it where it is now. During the process of writing this essay, my strengths were creating supporting details that helped to explain my topic. For future projects I will make sure to create a timetable so I know when I need to have completed certain steps for my projects or work.
Overall throughout humanities in term one I had quite a few bumps in the road. There were those times when I had a challenging time completing some guided notes at the beginning of the year. Also I had trouble when coming up with ideas for a story line for my Frankenstuffie creative writing. I always seem to have a problem when first coming up with an idea. It takes longer then it needs, but I know that once I have the idea, everything else comes easily. But even with all of the challenges that came my way in term one, I can’t forget my strengths. I had a strong point in writing essays. Although I may not have gotten the best mark in some of them, I know that if I had put just the little bit more effort I could have had a much better outcome.

Overall Portfolio Reflection

image

Throughout all of term one I was content on trying my hardest for all of my work and putting in that extra effort to make everything well done. This was more challenging then I thought it would be. With the extra activities outside of school that I was doing, it took my focus off of my school work. There for I did not put my full effort into my most of my work. My study habits were also not the best for term one. I know that for term two I need to schedule everything so that I know when and where I am able to do my work, as well as putting my full effort into all of my work.

Everybody has there own strengths when it comes to learning wether they know them or not. For me, I feel like I am a strong writer. When I put all my effort into writing a story, essay, or other writing piece, I can really do well and succeed. Challenges come with everything in life, much like my ability to learn comes with some challenges of its own. I find it challenging to fix my work to make it better when I don’t get any feedback. Also if I don’t not understand something the first time, I find it challenging to keep my focus and try to understand what I am being taught.

My academic performance can always be taken to the next level. There is always something that could be done better. I can accomplish this by creating a better study habit for myself so that I am able to get all of my work completed and handed in on time. Also I can make the extra effort to go and ask for help right away when I don’t understand something, rather then leaving it to the last minute.

When I am in a small group I find it easy to talk and input my ideas, but when there is a lot of people, I get shy and tend to keep my ideas to myself. During group work or projects one of my strengths is to make sure everyone is on task as well as inputing my ideas right away. Although when there is a large group of people, like in front of the class, I find it challenging to get my ideas out there because my shyness takes over and prevents me from speaking up. I believe that this can possibly be fixed over time with lots of practice speaking in front of large groups.

This year alone I already feel like I have grown in the classroom as a young adult. I feel this year I have taken on the responsibility of making sure I get my work done without anyone reminding or hassling me. This has been a challenge, but I feel as if I have grown from this learning experience. Without a few challenges here and there, I don’t think I would learn and develop as much as I have now. At the time the challenges may be tough and make you want to give up, much like I went through, they really helped to shape who I am today.
